Default 1200F paint on Stainless Steel exhaust OK?

I expect to be installing a Tsudo dual exhaust in a few weeks and am seriously considering spray painting the Stainless Steel pipes between the axle and the rear resonators high temp (1200F) flat or satin black! Is anyone aware of any problems with doing this?

If not, does anybody have any recommendations on a good paint to use?

Thanks -- Trevor

I as well will be installing the tsudo Exhaust Soon, Should be Here Tuesday. If I was to paint the pipes I would use VHT High Heat Engine Paint. Have used it B4 on engine blocks def look's great and last's. Hope this helps, Def post pic's once you have installed your exhaust.

Thanks for the suggestion !

I checked on the VHT "flameproof" paint and they recommend it be used with their primer. Just wondering if this is something I need be concerned about with a brand new exhaust pipe. I'll have to look around and see if VHT is available locally.

Just think about it...metal has extremely high coefficient of expansion and steel is quite ductile...you'd want to use paint with a primer, right?

you're talking about the axle back, correct? if so, the hi temp 1200f paint should be fine. it all comes down to prep... i'd go with a hi temp primer then hi temp paint combo. use some red brillo pad to scuff the entire section to be painted. then follow that up with a good paint prep cleaner then follow the directions on how to coat/time betweet coats on the paint cans. wear nitrile or latex gloves from the cleaning point on to avoid transfer of oils from the skin. i have a trd knock off exhaust and cut the tip off and added another bolt on one and did it in the 500f paint. its further under the car, but not so much to burn my bumper, and subdued so it doesn't stand out as much as everyone elses and i love it. you have a great idea to be different from everyone else with shiney pipes. i can't wait to see pix of the final results!!! remember... its all in the prep!!!!

I'm really not clear on whether primer improves expansion tolerance of the finish coat. The manufacturer mentions improved adhesion and color uniformity, and VHT is specifically targeted towards headers. Just don't know how much difference the undercoat would make when starting with a perfect surface. Also not sure how many coats are a good idea when the purpose is to color the pipes, but not restrict heat escape. The primer is flat white and the top coat is flat black. Preferance would be just one coat of each I guess!

So you're saying not only primer, but scuff the surface and hit it with a paint prep cleaner. Well, I can see there could be manufacturing oils and residue on the new pipes. This takes a little thought!

The exhaust bolts to the back of the last cat, so I think cat-back is the correct term. My thinking is to make the rear resonator piping disappear when viewed from the lower rear, so that would be the pipes from the axle area flange rearward to the point where they join the rear resonators. I wasn't planning to paint the pipe from the cat or the resonators and tips. I prefer to keep it to the minimum since it's virtually certain the paint will get chipped over time. I'll be better able to evaluate it when I finally get to look over the exhaust kit.

Just ran across this photo from another forum member who just today received his kit and tried fitting the pipes together. It shows the specific pipes I intend to paint -- stopping at the point of resonator attachment.
