Any idea what this xB reliability rating is all about?

Consumer reports gives it an excellent in terms of predicted reliability. I take JDP and CR ratings with a grain of salt. Its a toyota, and I expect mine to last a long time without crapping the bed.

Looking at the JP numbers seemed really strange. Everything was 5/10 except Honda which was consistently 8/10, with the xB being an exception at 6/10. I'd love to see the real data going into that conclusion!

Regardless, its proven engine, a good tranny, and its built well for the price. Its rated high on resale, so keep up the maintenance and enjoy. If you ever have to sell it, you'll make your money, I expect to be driving my xB in the 150k+ range.

This might be the reason why the numbers are weird:
Dependability Ratings

These scores come from consumer ratings of their vehicles after three years of ownership.
Looking at the 2009 xb2 ratings on that site, it seems that it's the "Body & Interior Dependability" and the "Feature & Accessory Dependability" of the 2004/2005 model that is bringing the overall reliability scores down. The "Powertrain Dependability" scores are good.

Not sure about the soundness of using 2004/2005 xb1 scores to predict 2009/2010 xb2 reliability.

I'm in the same boat partner. Hopefully we'll get in touch in a few years to see how we did hehehe

Can't say I'm too worried about it falling apart on me -- as you say, most indications are it's a pretty solid machine. My old AWD Eclipse is running well at 126K, and I'd hope the mechanically simpler xb2 easily meets and beats it.

I'm just having difficulty seeing how it can land two points below the Hondas. I undersand the 2.4L Camry has an excellent reliability rep.

Ahh, they're mixing the cars are they. Guess that's what happens when the model designation doesn't change, but the car does. Wonder what the xB1 owner complaints were in those two categories?
