Epidemic Water Pump Problem!
New pump under warranty.
Let's see, at 200,00 miles I will only have had the water pump replaced thirty times. That doesn't seem so bad.

Man, I've been following SF's advice in this forum for close to 4 years now. Matter of fact, I am going to finally get around to the reverse light mod this weekend or next. (Original SF DIY!)
Anyhow, last time I went in for service at 40K on my 2008 (ultra rare nautical blue!), service advisor noticed the tell tale pink line on the hoodliner. Replaced water pump on warranty.

While a water pump should last at least 60k miles IMO, it seems like Toyota is very good about replacing them at the first sign of failure. I too had a faint pink line on my hood last year but instead of replacing the pump I added some Prestone water pump conditioner and the water pump hasn't leaked since. I'm at 51k miles now and can't say how long before I'll need a new water pump but the problem with ours seems to be seal related and not so much the bearings.
To millardmt: I've heard and agreed with a lot of negative comments about Toyotas over the years but until recently I've never heard anyone call them unreliable or "poorest quality".
Dear Mr. Fred:
Funny you should bring that up ... Upon espying the pink line under my hood, my dealer service rep immediately concluded: "It's not your pump - it's the wrong kind of coolant attaking your seals."
But when I returned to retrieve my car, the pump had indeed been replaced.
Hmmm ...

As long as Toyota approves the repair, the dealer usually makes money on it so they don't mind doing it regardless of the cause. Were you running Toyota's proprietary silicon-free, organic acid, red anti-freeze, something else or a mixture? I've changed mine twice already at 51k and only use Toyota AF with distilled water.
"Toyota's proprietary silicon-free, organic acid, red anti-freeze ..."
You're kidding, right? The only thought I've ever given anti-freeze is that some misguided critter hasn't had the chance to lap some of it up ...
Nope, for all I know, Toyota topped off my overflow reservoir with sulphuric acid just before putting it (along with the rest of the car) on the boat for the States.
What ever happened to the days of cast-iron water pumps? (When men were men? I'm joking, I'm joking!)
Sigh. And to think I used to be such a gear-head ...

"Prestone water pump conditioner" eh? I'll try to remember that since I've no reason at all to expect Toyota to replace my pump should it fail (unless they choose to acknowledge their evident problem -- perhaps I should add some now?) Unfortunately, I don't have an extended warranty, and although the car is now four years from purchase, it's still less than 11 Kmi. I don't expect the basic warranty will do me much good in case of a pink line (I've read where people have had to pay
)! Crossed fingers? Guess my preference is Toyota identify a pump that doesn't exhibit this failing. Was hoping that might be the case with their 2.5L engine water pump, but haven't seen anything regarding it, and even if improved, it probably wouldn't retrofit to the 2.4L
-- guess I'm not expecting too much in that regard, but surely would be nice. Toyota may show "largesse" once with your vehicle, but twice? thrice? more? Not from what I've read
!
Look on the bright side... my 2008 pump is still fine after 51k miles so you might not have to worry about yours for another 20 years.

BTW, the faint "pink" line I saw on my hood might just as likely been dirty water thrown there by the drive belt. I really couldn't tell if it was pink or tan. All I know is that I washed my engine bay last summer, added the Prestone stuff and the hood liner is still "pink"-line free. Prestone claims that it conditions and lubricates WP seals and I didn't see any harm in spending $4 on it.

PS. I understand your own "pink line" issue could be suspect, but it's clear others have had exactly that issue. I prefer you not have to replace your pump, and likewise myself and others on this forum. Thanks for your input

just had mine replaced which probably has been "weeping" for a bit, i added some AF once just to top-off in the past 30k or so.
Anyway, 98,984 miles when i brought in for various items including the drive belt when they noticed the crusty build up on the weep-hole. Though you may not ever really see a drip.
My extended 3rd party Warranty covered it thankfully, as they wanted $520 parts/labor to do it LOL. A whole 4-5 bolts and barely anything in the way really... So $50 deduct wasn't bad at all.

I'm told the new pump part number is 16100-0h050 (old is 16100-0h040). Here's an example supplier

Good info!
I'm begining to wonder if the coil problem that resulted in a "recall" had something to do with the EPA? Toyota put a sticker on the underside of my hood stating that the recall performed meets the EPA CARB specifications!
Toyota sent me a questionare asking my opinion on how the work was performed and how I liked my Scion!! So I told them what I really thought and haven't heard a peep back from them!
I believe that the recall covers all 08 xB's. Call your dealer and ask, don't wait for the letter that may not get delivered.
