Just take a peek at the hood liner occasionally above the pump, and if you don't see a pink line then your pump is good.

Replaced mine today for the second time. Once at 49,000. Now at 80,000. The brake pads lasted longer.

I was wondering how many repeat offenders we have here with the water pump problem? I guess I have something to watch for in another 15k since my first pump was replaced at 41k. I was hoping that they made some design change to up the quality of this part, no dice I guess!

A 1971 Beetle doesn't have coil-on-plug packs or a water pump to worry about.

I must be really lucky because my very early 08 has TSBs for bodywork, main engine wiring harness, coils, excessive oil consumption and the "low quality" water pump but no problems at all after 50k very hard miles. Maybe the secret is to modify the hell out of the car and beat on it daily? It is a Toyota after all...

It kind of appears that way. Aside from a few water pumps and coil packs it seems that the vast majority of quality complaints and actual problems with the 08+ XB come from owners that bought the XB mainly because they couldn't afford a Prius...

For those of us that have had water pump problems and list it in the "Epidemic" water pump problem threat, you have to wonder why some people insist on telling us they haven't had this problem?

I guess it make them feel better about their purchase!

Now we will hear from the Scion cheerleaders! Wait for it..........

If attempting to point out that this "epidemic" water pump problem isn't really "epidemic" and trying to balance your hate is cheerleading, I suppose I am guilty as charged.

BTW, I'd still like to hear what makes you declare your Scion the lowest quality car you've owned in 40 years.

I have no hate. I just mentioned the problems with my xB and then have people tell me to go and buy another 71 VW. Is that why people should come here to get answers like that to their problems?

I let the people decide for themselves about the quality. I read this board and others to get a head-up on what to look for as in the water pump problem, glad someone mentioned this fault so others can watch out for this and maybe prevent ruining their engine.

I too never had the wiring harness problem, but so what! If someone does have this problem I would point them in the right direction if I can and not say they bought an xB because they couldn''t afford a Prius.

Good luck with your xB and I really do mean that!

You did a bit more than just mentioning some problems with your XB. You stated that in 40 years of buying new cars that your XB was the poorest quality car you've ever owned. I took offense to that statement and TBH, I don't believe you.

Out of curiosity, how much did your water pump replacement cost? Coils? How much total have you spent on towing and repairs to date? Have you changed your PCV valve and switched to 5w30 oil yet? Please let us know if this reduces your atypical oil consumtion rate. It certainly should.

Anyway, although I don't appreciate your negative attitude towards Scion and calls for frivolous class action lawsuits I wish you better luck with your XB or whatever car you replace it with.

As far as Scions being the poorest quality car, are you f'ing kidding me? I have owned (4) of them, (2) of which I still own and not once did I ever have to do anything other than change the oil and replace a battery...And my daughters xA was involved in a nasty accident and she walked away without injuries so they are built with safety in mind also...

Calm down Fred!!! No one really cares if you like your xB, you bought it enjoy it!! So much anger in your post isn't good for you!

I only post what the experiences with my xB have been, you can't change that so why get upset?

My xB is the poorest quality car in the last 15 new cars I've owned, my opinion. Nothing you can do, so you don't need to know my lifes history.

If stating my problems is a "negative" then I guess a lot of people on this epidemic water pump failure are guilty and shouldn't post! Get real!

One nice post, then BAM! Anger! Sorry, don't want to play your game.

Enjoy your xB, no hard feelings I hope!

Have a nice day!!!!

It seems difficult since I've seen Toyota say they've rolled corrections into existing part numbers. That may be convenient in terms of paperwork, but it doesn't help at all in trying to ensure you have the corrected version installed. I spent hours trying to determine what coil was reliable and believe I figured it out, but it's anything but apparent from Toyota's documentation. It really does seem as though their intent is to keep any corrections to faulty components as low profile as they can manage. I'm fortunate in that I accumulate miles very slowly and so benefit from the experiences of others. So far, that applies to a coil that went bad and the apparently tangible risk of snow/salt causing rear speed sensor misbehavior. My thanks, so far, go to my fellow xB2 owners rather than Toyota. Still, I do believe it's fundamentally a good car for the money and I'm not complaining.

LOL! Calm yourself down Spanky! I'm not angry, I'm just trying to figure out why your XB is the "poorest quality car" you've ever owned despite being ranked best in class for reliability by J.D. Power. If you don't want to explain why or try to fix it and all you want to do is _____ about it and try to start class action lawsuits against Scion, that's your perogative. Pretty nervy accusing me of playing games...

Good luck and good bye.

I'm not going anywhere, mad or otherwise. I was here for years before you showed up and I'll be here for years after you've moved on to a "quality car" forum. Unless you're the kind of guy who keeps the "poorest quality car he's ever owned in 40 years" just so he can complain about it.

I hope I'm wrong about you but you strike me as the kind of guy who runs over his dog and then sues Toyota for unintended acceleration.

Man, I've been following SF's advice in this forum for close to 4 years now. Matter of fact, I am going to finally get around to the reverse light mod this weekend or next. (Original SF DIY!)

Anyhow, last time I went in for service at 40K on my 2008 (ultra rare nautical blue!), service advisor noticed the tell tale pink line on the hoodliner. Replaced water pump on warranty.
