I was reading through and I noticed it's a problem with the '08s? I have an '09 and I just checked, I have no residue around my water pump or anything. I'll double check again later.

yup mines's an 08 and has the pink line also 36,000 miles here but it's been doing it since 26,000 miles. My 06 Corolla did the same thing common water pump problem!!! It drips and is slung from the belts cause your pink line under the hood. Never see any wet spots from it dripping.

ok, so after all this talk and giving my input about the water pumps, i decided to check my own during work when it was slow. here's what i found:

The infamous pink line on the hood liner. so yes, my pump is leaking...

You can see the pink corrosion build up under the pump, behind the pulley, from underneath the car.

Also, my oil pan gasket is leaking... boo.

at 32,xxx miles, i'm not surprised at any of this. i've seen cars with 10,xxx come in with water pumps going bad. the 1zz's and the 2az's are known to ____ coolant, so just keep an eye on your reservoir's level. since this is all under warranty, i'm replacing both AND i'm gonna get paid for it :D haha.

Where is the water pump located and should the pink residue show on the water pump too?

just checked under the hood of my 08.. and yep.. same pink line.. i'm only at 18k.. it's not very noticeable.. and if i hadn't have seen it on here i probably wouldn't have known about it.. so any idea if the new pump will fix this? or will we have to do this every 30k miles or so?

From what I've read from searching through other forums regarding other vehicles with the 2az-fe, this probably won't be the last time we'll have to replace the water pump.

I understand that the water pumps will eventually need to be changed out but these fail WAY to prematurely. They should last on average 100k-120k miles prior to a replacement. This engine has been out since 02, you would think by this time they would have a redesign to replace the defective water pump.

can i get a part number anyone?

got it...

00272-ssc2

so i spoke with the guy and he says its the same thing but different brand...hence the different part#? that its what toyota says to pour in, and its ok to mix, even though i had the super pink stuff with a different part number...hmm....i dunno...can anyone shed more light on this? they are both long life from what i can find on the internets...

There's Toyota Long life Coolant(00272-1LLAC) and Toyota Super Long life Coolant(00272-SLLC2)

Anything prior to 2004 will use the long life, 04 and after will use Super long life.
Long life is good for 60k, super for 100K
they are mixable but when you mix you go to the properties of the lesser coolant.

Well just got my car back from the dealer, it was the water pump leaking from the weep hole. The tech said he's seen this same problem a bunch of times and as far as he knows there's been no design change to address it at all. He said you could get lucky and it might never leak again or you could have it leaking again in 10k miles. He did suggest that cars that are driven less are more likely to leak. I guess I'll just have to cross my fingers and check it often, not sure I can do much else. If it fails again outside of warranty I suppose I could try an aftermarket pump to see if that makes a difference.

I'm really disappointed that it appears this is a pretty common problem and these engines have been around long enough to have addressed the issues at this point. I believe toyota is repleacing the 2.4L 2AZ-FE engine in 2010 so maybe that will solve the problem. Not that that's much help to the rest of us
