No expert here, but as I understand, the first number is related to cold engine oil viscosity and 0W is probably fine outside of frigid environmental conditions. (I use a heavier weight, but I also run MMO and that should help with cold starts.) However, when the engine is at running temp, the second weight number comes to play, and lower is more likely to result in lubricant loss and cylinder/ring wear. (I prefer greater protection to help preserve engine life.) Not sure there's a hard and fast rule as to the best choice, but that's my current preference
