Help convince me to buy the 2008 xB I have a deposit on...
That's good to know about the newer Prius. The early ones had a 425 pound load capacity IIRC - mostly limited by the OE tires, I think.
Here's a chart with some eye-opening numbers for some cars - like a Cadilac with a 400 pound load limit or the Honda Insight at 365 pounds.

Some are pretty amazing too. Suzuki XL-7 @ 1190 lbs.
One other interesting pair: Saturn Sky 425 pounds, Pontiac Solstice 355.
I'm not sure my ex biz partner (6'7", 320 pounds) would even fit into a Miata to overload it.
Fits in my xB just fine, though, front OR rear! :D
Be interesting to see how someone his size fits into the larger xB2. Should be OK in the front, not too sure about the rear.

I'm close...6'2 300lbs and I fit pretty good in the back of the nex xb's even with the seat adjusted for myself in the front.
Now the old xb's felt like more room in the rear, I sat in one of those on the lot too. I think it only felt more comfortable becuase of my legs being able to go under the front of the seat more. That is probably the biggest defference between the two from looking and sitting and considering both.
I am in the same boat as the OP. There were a few ergonomics of the new xb that bother me. I too felt a little weird in the seat. Not bad, but not immediately comfortable.
The steering wheel does need to come out more and I also thought it needed ot be higher.
arm rests were weird too. The driver's seat side was okay but it's tiny and it feels like it could snap off (the only thing IMHO that reall felt cheap in the car) The driver door side was too low and the high brow windows don't give you a spot for your arm either.
In contrast, sitting in the old xb. I felt it gave me more side to side leg room...there is nothing to hit your leg in the center on the old xb like the new ones center console shifter.
However the old xb felt to narrow for my size. I felt squished side to side.
Some other things I noticed - I really like the olde styler speedometer than the digital one.
Love the toaster oven, the new one has some nice cubbies, but the center console/armrest thing is super small. It must be just big enough to put a cd jewel case in it.
The ipod hook up spot seems unintuitive. They should have put it in the console box, where it's at now with that adapter cable...it's not very clean
I really enjoyed the ride and the power of the new xb. I always felt like the old xb was a like driving a golf cart in terms of power and the way you felt the road. I really felt like I was on the ground in an old xb.
Not sure what to do, there is not many choices in this class of car. This size and storage and gas mileage suits me perfect. I am one of these mid-thirty guys with 2 kids who has looked at PT cruisers and HHR's and is no considering the new xb. (sorry guys, trash me if you want) I've also looked at the mazda 3 and the rear seating is too small.
I am just more confused than when I started. It's been a few months since I drove an old xb, but I'm starting to think maybe I should try to find a dealer who has one and give it a try.

Just my 2 cents:
I have a friend who just got rid of his 05 Mazda 3 5-door because of the lousy mileage he was getting - he averaged 22mpg. And I've read elsewhere other owners reporting the same thing - great power, but lousy mileage.
And since I was a previous box owner, the "feeling" you get when sitting in it, yes at first, is odd - because of the vertical-ish windshield and the overall boxiness (I'm not attesting to the new xB, but 1st gen, but still...), this is something that is VERY easy to get used to. I thought I'd have a tough time getting used to my tC after having the box for a while, but the original "crowded and cramped" feeling I had when I first drove my tC went away. It's all a matter of time.
I was considering a Mazda 3 also when looking at the tC, and I went with Scion again based on value and the overall Toyota quality - something you don't get with a Mazda.
It sounds like a new 08 xB 5-speed will be the best thing for you, but that's just my 2 cents!

Just popped the cherry on another box. Scion of Washington got in a Blackberry auto and a Teal stick, I tried the stick.
I was able to find a more comfortable position, and it did not seem as tall to me.
The only prob I had was the clutch pedal; I was too high and my knee would hit the wheel when it was all the way out. I have heard this complaint a couple times now, I wonder if any 3rd party can do something to fix this?
