Latest engine treatment?
I have a 2nd gen XB and really love it. It’s been the most reliable useful vehicle I’ve ever owned.
I was so disappointed when I discovered the engine issue after the extended warranty ended. I now have 260k on it and want to keep it going but it’s starting to use some oil, almost a quart every couple tanks. Is there anything I can do to help this. I have moved up to 10wx30 on oil as a local mechanic recommended but it does mot seem to make a difference. I have read of a piston soak routine with diesel and oil mix. Also seen a specific “RingFree” product mentioned in some forums. Any help would be greatly be appreciated.

If you had the facility and followed the procedure to the letter... it might help but might not. Depends on whether the stuck oil rings have caused irregular wear to the cylinder walls. Easiest way to check cylinder wall condition might be a compression test and a camera inspection.
Toyota's TSB covered 2AZFE engines that burned more than a quart in 1200 miles. Less than a quart at 1200 miles was considered "normal". Sounds like yours might be burning twice as much or more, suggesting you have cylinder damage. In Toyota land, this means scrap as Toyota engines do not facilitate resurfacing and or cylinder honing. Your amount of consumption suggests your engine is beyond benefit of chemical cleaning. That said, a compression test and optical camera inspection would tell you for sure.

Geez I hope the engine not shot. It seems to be running well still but who knows. I can check compression and I do have a scope camera I can check the cylinder walls with. Guess I can’t expect the 400-500k miles that I hear these cars can reach.
Thanks
Tom
