Default Engine dying :(

I think my engine is dying in 2012 Scion xB. I have to out a quart of oil in it at least 2 or 3 times in between oil changes.
I have no idea where it's going except out the tailpipe, but there is no smoke on the tailpipe at all. It doesn't smoke while it idling either.

Do I need a new engine?

Do you see any leaks and is the tailpipe excessively black? That is a significant amount of oil to just go missing.

Google Toyota oil consumption recall. If you are still covered take it to the dealer to have it fixed. It's a known issue with the engine in our cars.

It's a 10year 150000 mile extended warranty right? I think I'm 6000 miles out of the extended warranty at 156000. I want to cry.

An oil brand with a low NOACK rating might burn off slower.

Yep, if you're at 156,000 they yes you are over the mileage limit on it. You won't find any evidence of it outside of the dropping oil level. It's getting past the piston rings and getting burned up in the cylinder chamber. If you can handle the work the fix is replacing the pistons and put in updated rings.

Greg S,

Is this a problem that is related to specific years, or is this all model year xB Gen 2's?

Mostly 2008-2011, but there have been cases with 2012s that I know of as well. It's not just xBs, it's any car that Toyota put the 2AZ-FE engine in. so tCs, Camrys, RAV4s, and others. The oil consumption recall was done in place of Toyota loosing a class action lawsuit.
