Since this thread is chock full'o gen1'ers loving the article, I'll point out my favorite part of that particular part of Mad Magazine Automotive Division's junk piece:

It didn’t fail. Daihatsu assembled the original Scion xB, supplies the new xB and xD to Toyota, and sells a version of the ’08 xB as the Daihatsu Materia.

Somebody needs to move this thread over to gen1 lounge so you can continue to talk among yourselves without cluttering up the gen2 lounge with ancient information.
Oh and while I'm at it, from your other thread referenced in here:

This is old info.
The guy who wrote it is an unprofessional clown who made it clear he knows nothing about the topic in a number of erroneous statements throughout the article.
Maybe you think your car IS a Daihatsu?
My point about your other troll you referenced here, was that you want to lump everyone into groups. According to you, gen1 owners are the old timers and gen2 owners are the newbies. Randy and Marshall (to name a couple) are newbies according to you I guess?
Naturally, you were compelled to display your cherubic nature yet again.
Troll on dude.
when did i ever say anything about Daihatsu? your clearly thinking that im someone els.... and your talking about a diffrent thread then the one your on... i guess oldtimers hits when you 50...
grand pa this thread and the other one has nothing to do w/ one another one guy posted something and i told him if you want to talk about it go to this thread like you should have done but you jumped ahead and started pointing fingers and brangging about being here longer... talk about old enough to know better jeez now if you wanna talk about my other thread go to my other thread and ill be more then happy to talk about what ever it is you wanna talk about that thread... thank you...
c'mon guys play nice. name calling won't get you anywhere in life. chill.
anyway, yeah, daihatsu and toyota collaborate closely on sub-compact models in the asian market.
the xB2 is different. not to some of our tastes, obviously.
i think many people are getting the xB2/switching to the xB2 because it's a scion and it's an "xB". so they're sort of jumping on the bandwagon kinda ? or they're continuing the "xB" line with the "next generation", for better or for worse. that's what i see it as ...

Either way, as pointed out, I don't believe the xB2 is built by Daihatsu anyway.

I'm kinda disappointed that Daihatsu did fail in the US. Their cars were better built than the early Hyundais by far and weren't all that bad. They had the Charade and the Rocky.
When I visited Hong Kong after I got out of the Air Force I loved the variety of small cars/trucks/vans they has available there. I also saw a "panel van" version of the Daihatsu Charade being used as a work vehicle there. Very cool stuff indeed. I think the most "out of place" thing I saw there was a gigantic RHD Cadillac Eldorado.

I read the article and found that the author seems to be caught up in "being cool" rather than accurate. For instance he states that he got about 22mpg with the new xB. Was he doing only stop and go driving while racing up the side of a mountain? I drive my xB pretty hard here in the burbs and I haven't gotten worse than about 27mpg. When I am driving normally, I get much closer to 30mpg and on the highway from Philly to New York, I averaged 32mpg. So it seems to me that the author in willing to exaggerate to make a point and that of course waters down his integrity.
I bought the xB for it's utility. I happened to buy the new xB rather than the original because the original didn't have the horsepower to handle life in the fast moving, short highway ramp life of the Philly burbs. I didn't buy it for it's looks nor would I have bought the old xB for it's looks. I'll leave that shallow thought process to the youngin's who think a "cool" car will get them laid.
And if you really bought the original xB just because you thought it was cool looking, I know someone who has a really cool looking AMC Pacer you might be interested in... lol

My father has an '06 xB. I have an '05 tC. I've driven the xB a few times. Power hasn't been my biggest complaint, though I haven't driven it enough to try to merge onto roads where you need to being doing 80 to do it.
My complaint with the original xB is that it rides like my '94 Corolla. Loud and rickety. (i hope i don't catch too much ____ for saying that, lol) The tC has a much smoother ride. The biggest reason i'm considering the '08 xB over the original as a replacement for my Corolla is the hopes that this 'ricketyness' was fixed (and I've read places that it has been... i just haven't gotten a chance to try it for myself). I drive too much to have anything but a smooth ride. (though yes... i want the rims & lowering springs for the xB, go figure) Everyone has their taste.
Yes i'm surprised Toyota got away from the sharp edges, and that now the xB and Element look very similar... but it is Toyota made, it does have the Scion support, and it's not THAT ugly, hehe.

You guys must live in strange hateful places.
Everyone thats come running up to me with questions about the 08 xB has been nothing but
"WOW What an improvement!"
"I liked the old one a lot but WOW this looks so much better!"
"I hated the old one, but this one is great!"
and so on and so on.
I've been out in public outside of my car and had people walk up to it not realizing i was the owner talking to eachother about how much better this design is and saying they were going to go test drive one.
The only guy who didn't like it said "Yeah but Scions are Toyota and Toyota blows" (Honda fan im sure).
I miss my 06.5 xB quite a bit. It was a ton of fun zipping around in it. This car does feel a lot different and i can understand and relate to you saying it doesn't really count as the new xB, but guess what? Thats what it is. Its NAMED xB. Toyota/Scion owns it they get to name it. No more arguing about it being xB2 or Not the new xB but something else, its the xB
But this car is better. Hands down. Maybe you dont like the styling thats your opinion. But its a better car.
On the topic of MPG, I have only reset the AVG MPG twice. Once when i first bought it, and juts before last weekend when i went to the beach. I was averaging in 90% city traffic 25.8MPG (Confirmed withing about .6mpg by doing the math at the pump) and then with 4 adults, a dog, and a full trunk of stuff on the way to the beach we averaged 29.5 MPG.
In my 06.5 i was averaging 27ish city and 31ish freeway. So for a sacrifice of at the MOST 2.5-3MPG i have vastly improved safety, performance, handling, and IMO the look of the car.
Car and Driver hasn't posted a non-biased review since.... what year did they begin publishing again?

^ having owned both, any comments to what i said about the smoothness of the ride of one over the other?
I'll just start calling it the 2nd Gen xB. Already have to do that for my Paseo. It only had two generations. 92-95, and 96-97 (mine).
