Default Professional Grade Cabin Air Filter

I had one of these made for my truck awhile back and decided to make one for the xB.

I purchased the filter from HD and the frame from Hobby Lobby.
The filter was about $10 and the frame about $7.

Used my miter saw to cut the frame pieces to size. Had to cut the sides a little shorter, about 1/8th to 1/4in, due to the stock filter gives when you put the cover on, this hard framed filter will not.

You use these clips or brackets to attach the frame pieces together.

I used some wire cutters to cut the plastic cage piece to size.

I used sissors to cut the filter to size. I used 1 layer of the carbon and 2 layers of the filter. Probably only need 1 layer of filter, but I decided to try 2 on this first one.

Thank you for the DIY. I've been cutting a section out of a whole sheet and just jamming it in the slot. I never thought of making a frame like that.

Actually, I didn't measure it. I just eye balled it against the stock filter.
It came out too long. This is due to the way Scion made it, the stock filter is actually bigger than the space, but it gives when you put the cover on. So I had to cut about a 1/4in. off to have room to put the cover on.
I will pull it out and measure it tomorrow and let you know.

Nice DIY. I just cut out a square piece of house filter and stuck it in there, I'll try making a frame like this on a rainy day.

I took RicRat's dims and made an aluminum frame. I bought a 4' length of aluminum ($5.50), flat corner braces ($2.00), and a WEB Eco Washable filter ($20.00) from Home Depot today. The filter has a lifetime warranty and is supposed to last as long as 120 standard filters. Hopefully it'll do what it claims and I can feel good about not adding more rubbish to the landfills....The dims of the filter are large enough to make filters for my '08 xB, my daughter's '06 tC, and our friend's 1st gen '06 xB. Good value.

The frame. I sprayed it because I have plenty of paint on hand and because it's just plain fun. So why not, yeah?

And frame inserted behind glove compartment. Fits perfectly.

The '06 tC comes with a plastic tray so I simply cut filter to size and voila!

Done with hacksaw, JB Weld, Dremel, and scissors on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Glad I could help and inspire someone.
The washable filter was a great idea. The ones in my truck are washable.
I wanted the carbon for odor. I suppose I could buy a washable one and insert the carbon also.

Where did you find the plastic cage material?

By looking at his pics, the plastic cage comes with the filter as the filter is "cut to fit".
