Scion xB mods required to Register in Canada? Please Help!
There have been a few posts in the past but none really answered the question.
Is there anyone living in Canada who purchased a Scion in the U.S. and brought it back into Canada? If so, exactly what mods were required, where did you get the parts and how much does it cost in total? To me it appears the cost should be only a few hundred bucks plus the fees at the boarder
(GST which I would have to pay on any car, as far as I can tell there is no duty, A/C excise tax $100.00 and RIV registration fee $206.70). This certainly isn't enough to justify the $25,000 CDN that most used xBs sell for in Canada, especially since the dollar is @ $0.90 U.S.. But maybe I'm missing something.
These are the requirements provided by RIV.ca (Registrar of Imported Vehicles)
a) U.S. statement of compliance label (SOC);
**I ASSUME THIS IS ALREADY ON THE VEHICLE
(b) valid alpha-numeric 17-digit VIN;
**I ASSUME THIS IS ALREADY ON THE VEHICLE
(c) Metric speedometer and Odometer labels. (The inspection centre will place labels if required)
**THE SPEEDOMETER IS DIGITAL RIGHT? SO HOW DID YOU CONVERT IT TO KILOMETERS? This I'm guessing may be the pricey part.
(d) recall documentation (we require a letter from the Original Equipment Manufacturer stating there are no outstanding recalls on your vehicle. VIN must be included);
**DID YOU GET THIS FROM THE DEALER OR DID YOU HAVE TO CONTACT SCION HEAD OFFICE?
(e) Daytime Running Lights;
**I HAVE READ THAT YOU CAN INSTALL A HAMSAR PART#45055 DRL KIT(HAMSAR.COM), BUT DOES THIS COMPLY WITH REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS? IF NOT WHAT PARTS DID YOU USE, WHERE DID YOU GET THEM FROM AND HOW MUCH WERE THEY?
(f) Functioning airbags (if, originally equipped with airbags); and
**ARE THEY STANDARD FOR ALL YEARS?
(g) French Supplementary Restraint system label for airbags that require periodic maintenance.
**WHERE DID YOU GET THIS FROM?
ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS: Are you able to get insurance for the drive back from the U.S or do you have to trailer the car? How about the warranty, are you able to get repairs or maintenance done in Canada or do you have to cross the border to get this done? Scion.com was pretty vague about this when I asked, they just said that the warranty is valid in all of North America but did not answer whether I could have the work done at a Toyota dealership in Canada? I mean let's say the engine blows, can I take it to a Toyota dealership in Winnipeg and have it covered by warranty? It is valid in all of North America and they are the one's who will have to pay to ship required parts to where I am, right?
I live in Winnipeg and I am considering purchasing either a 2006 or 2008 Scion xB a couple of hours away in the U.S. from a dealership and I am wondering exactly how much this will cost me. The info I got from RIV.ca
(Registrar of Imported Vehicles) tells me what needs to be done, but I will need the parts and I would want to do most of the mods myself because I don't trust Canadian Tire(the store contracted to do mods and inspections).
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a million.

On the riv.ca it doesn't say Scion xB is allow or not allow at all. Only Toyota/Lexus up to 2007
is allow and 2005 & 2006 Scion tC INADMISSIBLE so which is kinda weird in my view.
but i do know the 2006 is allowed but I'm not too certain about the 2008 model yet.
Hope someone did get a 2008 past the boarder if so please post up your detail
Thanks~

Did anyone ever answer this question?? Is the digital speedo able to do both km and miles with a push of a button? What about the daytime running lights question? This forum should provide answers, not tell you to ask the dealers. People have already gone through all the steps and now someone needs to make a sticky on the subject.
digital speedo can be altered by holding one of the buttons for a second or two. Daytime running lights are not standard on the xb2, but someone with a wiring knack could find a way to wire a way into ignition controlled lights...

dei makes an add on for just that. the model number is: 545t and you can find it as cheap as $35. it basicly consists of 2 relays, an eye, and a few wires. it keeps your parking lights on as running lights and your headlights turn on as soon as it gets dusk-y. the head lights can still be turned off with a small toggle switch that comes with it.
Hi,
I just stumbled upon this forum. I live in Toronto and I'm interested in importing a Scion XB.
Have the same questions as the original poster. I see it's from a few years ago - does anyone have current info? Can anyone help?
RIV does not have details on mods as this is not a model sold in Canada yet.
Also, seems these vehicles are manufactured in Japan - can anyone comment on what the duties would be?
Thanks in advance for your help!
