Default Strange audio problem with Ipod.....

So about two weeks ago my bro installed my sub/amp and it works just fine except for one odd thing. When my ipod is connected, the sub works great. But as soon as I disconnect it, it literally stops working. I didn't realize it till yesterday since I tend to leave it pluged in all the time.

Any ideas as to what is causing this ?

Hmmmm....what did he tie your amp remote wire into? Sounds to me like he may have tied it into the Ipod connection harness wiring, so when the ipod is on the sub is on. Need more info as to what head unit, where he wired the remote line, etc.

I have the premium h/u not sure exactly what he connected to what. I do remember him saying he had to tap the amp to a blue wire so maybe that might help.

Blue wire?? Hmmm....doesn't sound right. I just did a similar hookup on mine, and the remote is tied into the grey wire on the largest harness plugged into the head unit. Same premium hu. Have him reconnect that way.

Hmmm, since I've had my sub/amp installed, anytime I unplug the iPod while the car is on and supplying power to the system, then turn off the car the subwoofer shuts off with a "thump" sound. Everything still works however just a minor annoyance. So now I only unplug my iPod after I shut off the engine and no problems.

Just called my bro and he said he taped a blue wire on the harness that plugs up to the radio so it would turn the amp of when the car shuts off. He did mention there were two blue wires and doesn't remember which one but he'd take a look at it and see what he did wrong. So you guys are saying there is a grey wire that is needed to be taped instead of a blue one?

Sorry i'm a total noob and retard when it comes to audio

It is turned on otherwise it wouldnt work at all. It will shut off as soon as I unplug my ipod and immediately turn back on when I plug it back in.

Well the grey wire is what I tied into....i went off a wiring diagram and most all the ignition/accessory power wires are grey. Don't recall seeing any blues for that purpose. Blue could be something for the ipod interface, that's why I think that's why it only is working when you plug in the ipod.

Do you by any chance have the wiring diagram available to show me? Could the way its wired up now potentially be bad for the wiring harness ? I'll get my bro to pull the radio out and see whats up. If it is bad i'll leave it unpluged until he gets a chance to look at it which probably won't be till the weekend.

Ignorance is nothing to be ashamed of; ignorance of your ignorance is unforgivable.

I know a bit about 12V stuff, and blue is industry standard for amp turn-on for aftermarket stereo. However, as far as I know, all the car manufacturers are using whatever colors they feel like (though they're pretty standardized within the brand).

Please don't let anyone who works on your car use only tape to make audio connections...solder, crimp, even Scotch-loc, if you have to tie in.

Sorry I meant "tap", like tap into a wire not "tape". Yeah he either crimps or soldiers wires.

LOL Thank goodness!

BTW: Someone posted a link to zipped PDF's of all of the wiring for the pre-'08 Scions, I think somewhere on this site. I downloaded the xA one for future reference, so I know it's out there somewhere. But it sounds like you just need to tie into the grey and you'll be all set, though. Good luck.
