Why does the Corolla make more power?

Why does the Corolla make more power?
Why does the Corolla of the same motor make more power? I've been wondering this since the XD came out and then the corolla debuted a year later with the same motor. I've tried google for several different ways - from the straight question - to trying to find part numbers.
I mean it weighs more, gets better highway mileage, and has a few more horse power. It kills me because it doesn't make sense.
Now I've heard general uninformed answers of it (the XD) is de-tuned, but how is it? Is the spark retarded, do they have different diameter throttle bodies, does it have a free-er flowing exhaust, what is it I may take to make my car more efficient/more power?
Somebody with some insight of if there is any different part numbers for something having to do with the engine/power, please put me in the know. I'm losing sleep over here.

Here's an obvious reason: It's a different car!
No, really. Just because it has the same "engine" does not mean it should be exactly the same in other ways. So it likely has a different transmission. The aerodynamics are obviously different... do I need to continue?

dont need to put someone down like that. people learn from questions like these. but since 03 they made more power. well yea the base model is abit more powerful cause wieght. aerodynamic. ect. .. but the upgraded xrs models have 2zz engines (03-07 I believe) ( est. 160hp) and the new ones have 2az engine (tc/camry engine) (est 170hp)

different internals i highly doubt, but truly, i hope you needn't explain more....as you have mentioned, it's an entirely different car. You want more HP? you're not really going to feel the difference. your mind may play tricks on you, thinking that you've gained speed/throttle response/etc. you want some REAL performance? take out the back seats. rip out that spare tire. rip out your carpet, and perhaps even take out the front passenger seat if you dont lug a friend or girl around. THAT will give you a more noticeable result. add some beefier, non-all weather tires, and a rear sway, and you should already be enjoying the car.
not to be harsh, but if you need to ask a question like this, you need to reevaluate your understanding of cars in general.

the xD is lighter by, varying from website to website, anywhere from 55-100 lbs. (edmunds and other websites all have different quoted curb weights from what I've seen.) and in all honesty, as a daily driver, youre not going to notice that extra baggage. think about it this way. can you really tell the difference in performance when you have your friend sitting next to you? a full car is a different story, because i do notice that, but when you pick up a buddy, theres really nothing you can feel if youre not paying attention to it, and even then, you still probably wouldnt.

LOl. dogbert with the win.
anyway...xDkidd. you said on another daily driver? you mean NOT the xD? i respect what you have to say; if you notice a difference then cool. If i have even 2 of my friends, i notice it, a full car is just horrible. I just personally never felt a diff with my girl or friend in the car.

I didnt see that error, meant as another daily driven xd owner. but yeah, either way. corollas been in the game for awhile. Im not surprised they have more power and more potential then the xd.

Well I do remember that the gearing was different in the Corolla. At highway speeds it maintains a lower RPM.
As for it being a different car, I'm pretty sure I understand the concept. In my original question I was asking if anyone knew of different parts so that it could be distinguished what may make an improvement.
Please don't post if you don't know.

look, the xD and the toyota corolla probably make the same exact power in both engines, but toyota chooses to advertise them with different power ratings to help differentiate them from one another. but you're never going to notice the absence of 4 bhp and 3 lb-ft of torque. the engines probably make the same exact power output, but maybe one of them has better exhaust than the other making it get slightly more power. as for MPG, that is easy, taller gearing, and better aerodynamics.
hey, question: how come the tC makes more power than the xB, and corolla/matrix xrs when they all use the same engine?
answer: the tC is awesome thats why!

It might seem kinda petty but grouped with what else I do to my car 4 horse power would be welcome. I know I won't feel 4hp, but doesn't mean I don't want them.
I'm just trying to find out whats different between the two, and learn a little something.
Oh and the Rav 4 also had your motor and makes 166.... (because it's awesome?)

Pure MARKETING that's all...!
My Yaris TS is advertised as a 136hp car. SAME engine, SAME engine bay, SAME Exhaust... Only difference is the transmission.
Does it actually puts down 8 more hp?? I highly doubt it....

it could be the ECU. Corolla has a Toyota ECU. xD does not. differences in the power for the 2.4 in the various car is the exhaust layout i bet.
e.g. mazda 3 put down 170hp. same chassis mazda 5 was 164ish. why? wxhaust system.
someone touched on gearing in the trans. good point as well. one of this months tuner mags talked about that too using a NSX as an example.
so it could be many factors. xD is geared for city driving which many americans do little of. traffic jam driving is what it should be called

Different website gives slight different results but I got the first comparisons from edmunds. both 5 speed 2009
corolla

I dont think those 4hp would make a difference if they exist
