Default My Turbo Journey Has ENDED...Car Returned by TURBOTOYOTAS:(

Well ladies and gentelman, it is OFFICIAL...Today I made the long a$$ drive from my side of town to Todd's neck of the wood's and dropped off my xD so that he could work his magic and turbo my xD...Todd will have my xD for approximately a month or so and was nice enough to give me a loaner... Todd will be sending me pics of the progress but I have been sworn to secrecy and will not be posting any pics until it is COMPLETE...I assure you, we are taking no short cuts and everything will be done right...I can not wait to this thing is done and I will post tons of pics once it is finished...

I want to give a BIG THANKS to my brother for sponsoring a portion of this turbo set-up...I want to give a BIG THANKS to Todd @ TT for taking my xD for this task and answering all of my questions...

So let the journey begin...

04/08/09

First of all, I want to thank Todd at TT for talking with me today and answering ALL of my questions...Todd and I have come to an agreement and for the people that have been following this thread I have some great news... Clap

TODD IS GONNA USE MY xD FOR THE TURBO PROJECT... Bow I can't wait and we should be able to get started sometime next week...

Just so you guys know, I am a complete turbo noob so I am learning as I go along...I learned alot by just talking with Todd today and also with Luis (ARIZONATURBO) here on SL...

I will try to keep you guys updated and I will let you know all the particulars when we decide on what turbo we go with...
Ok we are going with the Garrett GT2803 turbo...We are doing AEM FIC for management and full tune so I will have dyno numbers when were done...After talking with Todd, we never actually committed to a HP number but he did say over 200 to the wheels...Maybe Todd can chime in and say what number he expects...Just so everyone knows, mine is an AUTOMATIC...I'd be happy with 200...

I will hopefully be dropping my car off Monday morning and Todd will have it for a month or so...

Well change of plans...On Tuesday, Todd went to his Garrett distributor to pick up my GT2803 turbo but after he took one look at it he realized it was a no go...He could have made it work but would have had to make alot of modifications and we didn't want to go that route...

So after much discussion with Todd and Luis (ARIZONATURBO) we decided to go with the Garrett t3 Super60...

Todd says were still on schedule so i'm hoping another (3) weeks or so...

Garrett GT2803
Garrett t3 Super 60

How do the specs for these turbos differ?
and
What was the problem with the 2803? Housing too big?

I thought this was supposed to be a side mount turbo... so the size of the housing should not be that relevant.

Size had nothing to do with it...

changing factors:

1. GT2803 has 2" 2 bolt compressor inlet
2. GT2802 has 3 bolt compressor outlet.

Both of those would have required allot more work and added to the cost. I could have made it work, but was not part of the plan at this time.

The super 60 has a 2.5" standard inlet and a 2" outlet. Much easier to work with in this particular situation.

Todd

Couple small questions:
Are we looking at any modifcation to the bumper support?
Will it make use of the stock air box / compatible with aftermarket intakes?
Will the downpipe make use of the stock cats or are we looking at custom piping for that?

You have to drill 2 holes in the bumper support for the intercooler mouting brackets. (can be done on the car)

Will it make use of the stock air box / compatible with aftermarket intakes?
Intake is a cold air style with air filter located in area in front of driverside tire.

Will the downpipe make use of the stock cats or are we looking at custom piping for that?
Downpipe mounts to factory exhaust, where the header bolted up

Hope that helps

Todd

Todd,

What are you planning to use for engine management for this first build?

FIC? Emanage? Standalone?

I'm really interested on how the engine management part of the project goes. Mainly because the Yaris guys have had a nightmare trying to tune the car for FI using the common piggybacks. I know of 4 people that have tried the FIC with no success. One of them even took it to AEM and even they were not able to figure out how to make it work ok.

I don't have the exact details of what were the problems... I just know they are having problems with it.

Since, you don't provide the engine management solution along with the kit, would you at least give a recomendation about it? Or some pointers in order to make it work?

I think that would be a critical aspect in order to make this kit succesfull..!

Keep up the good work and keep us posted.
