Default How to ____ off an xD

I like angry looking cars. xD does not look that angry, so something had to be done about it).

Thanks to several guys from cafexd.com I decided to try out a pretty crazy little idea.

First there was a photoshop:

Then I went outside and made it a real project:

If my new fiveaxis lip will get painted tomorrow, I'll try to finish this up. Worst case - by the end of the week.

Fun being a guinea pig.

P.S. It's just flat black vinyl, so all this stuff is very easily reversible ;)

I ordered 6ft off eBay, but it still did not get shipped, so I stopped by a local sign shop and bought another 5 ft from them. Hopefully I get my eBay shipment tomorrow, otherwise I'll have to go back to the sign shop.

I did something like that to a buddy's Matrix a while ago - just the lower lip. xD will be a tad more radical.

Say it aint so!

Sorry, but I don't like this mod on the new xB, and I HATE it on the xD.

Please stop the madness. Imitating the GTi by putting black vinyl on your front bumper is rice. Period.

I'd put it in the same "rice" area as imitating BMW's black wheels with polished lip. ;)

I never thought of the GTI when I was photoshopping it. Evo X - maybe.

Too bad I really like vinyl - fun to work with and easy to get rid of when it gets boring.

It's actually a relief to see people that hate the design. If it was all positive - there is definitely something wrong with it, plus having something I did "rice" was the first for me - most of the time at the shows people would think my car is stock no matter how much stuff I do to it

you need to come to Gainesville GA and see the definition of rice, how is that rice? I see no imitation, just a more original idea.

Check the "spot the rice" thread... Black rims hardly qualify.

Black vinyl used to "simulate" a custom front bumper does make the cut.

I saw a Yais hatch with his front bumper center section black, but it was incorprated into a full two tone Black/White paint scheme. Still looked a little like a GTI knock-off, but time and money made it look nice.

Original? Like 5 2nd gen xBs have done it already... And they got it from the GTI and Evo X. It's been done on a ton of ther VWs as well. This may be the first xD, but it's far from original.

Also, if you remember, the first custom pics of the xD on the Scion.com website, (photoshopped) some had blacked out front bumpers. But those too appeared to be custom paint, not vinyl.

Sorry, but it just looks tacky.

This is the "vinyl racing stripes" mod of the future. And it will be played out just as quickly. Take my word for it.

Had to chime in, vinyl is not ALWAYS bad. the 1gen xB has vinyl on the door sills to black them out, if it is peeled off the stock body color is underneath. When I two-toned, the painter forgot to leave the sills black and I subsequently had to re-vinyl them blacked out. It can hardly be rice if I'm duplicating the OEM method for that exact vehicle.

As for the bumper, looks alright in the photoshop but doesn't seem to translate well since the edge lines don't look even from every angle. Also, not sure about why VW emulation would be a good thing, I would just buy a Golf if I wanted the look, the Australian Golf GT is twincharged

Like I mentioned before - I'm not trying to imitate some other car. xD happened to have this airdam outline in the bumper and lip that I thought would look interesting blacked out. The contours were there already, I just accented them more with vinyl, just like there is black vinyl between the windows on about 90% of cars. I couldn't care less about the GTI - no idea where that analogy came from.
