Looking at the xD
i disagree, i've talked to certified scion "master" technicians. they all have said it's a 5 speed, that's only listed as 4 as a sales point.
When the techs and mechanics look up parts for the car it even saids four speed automatic transmission. You think a marketing ploy is going to extend to the parts screen that the service writers at the dealerships look at?
maybe that's how it's listed, but it's a 5 speed, sorry.
It's a 4 speed. The torque convertor is confusing you. Looking at the specs, the final (overdrive) is 4th gear. Just because there is another ratio used between 1.0 and .70 until the convertor locks up doesn't mean it's a 5 speed.

Motivated by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 128 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque, the xD comes with a standard five-speed manual or an optional four-speed automatic. Scion's little hatch zips to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds with the manual transmission, a solid performance that even bests the Fit's sprint by a few tenths. Fuel economy is only average, however, at 27 mpg city/33 mpg highway and 29 mpg combined with either transmission.
Advertising a 5-speed is more advantageous than saying 4-speed (if it is a 5-speed) but you cannot say 5-speed if it's really a 4-speed... the FACTORY LITERATURE quoted above says 4-speed. So 4-speed it is. Period. Look at the shifter stops, PRN123D (D=4) I don't see the 5
I see you missed my point, anyway the burden of proof is on you since you are going against common sense. I could look at the contents of a full rebuild kit and that would give you undeniable proof it is a four speed but I'm sure you would still deny it as a evil Toyota cover up or some stupid ____. If you want to live in your little dream world that the xD is a five speed then go right ahead. The real automotive enthusiast here can tell the difference between a shift and torque converter lock up.
I traded in my 06 XA for a 2010 XD, and must say the xd is way nicer.
The 1.8 compared to the 1.6 doesnt sound like much but has much more pick up and doesnt dog out from a stop with the ac on high.
The xd interior is roomier but rear visability is hampered somewhat with smaller side rear windows.
I took posession of my new xd in stock condition and drove it for a week while waiting for my options to come in.
Although the xa handled pretty good, the stock xd was alot tighter.
After having the TRD 18" wheels, shocks, struts, springs, and lowering kit installed , it handled like a go kart.
I can drive it as hard as I want with the confidence of knowing the sport suspension can handle tons more than I could dish out.

then tell me why the master techs, who are specialized in it, all say 5 speed?
