Default xD cargo area - dead stuff....

Hello xD drivers - sorry about the subject, I wanted you to look at the post!

My wife is ready to trade her 2002 Protege 5 and she is considering an xD. Yeah! One thing that is important to her is the space and size in the rear cargo area. Would anyone be able to provide quick measurements of side to side and front to back with the rear seats still up?? Also, any experiences that you have had with putting things back there would be great. (groceries, suitcases - things like that!)

This is a cool little car - I would like her to get one!

Thanks,
Ben

haha, I jumped a little when I saw the title. I don't own an xD(yet) but I took my friend to the airport in my xA and we managed to fit all his luggage in there with the seats down. The xD's cargo area is just as big if not bigger i think. Scion.com says the cargo area is 10.5 cu. ft.

I know that doesn't help much but I felt like commenting anyway.

Uhm I don't know the measurements, but with the seats completely flat in the back I was able to fit an adult sized mountain bike in mine I'd honestly go see an xD to compare the space. Unless you're good at visualizing the numbers.

i've moved all mine and my roommate's stuff to and from college. with the seats folded flat, there is TONS of room.

with the seats still up, i can fit a double load laundry basket and still have room on each side. i would say...10 paper grocery bags at least too

Thanks - that is helpful -

The sticking point is a medium sized dog crate that is a must for the rear cargo area with the back sits up.

I may just make a template and take it to the dealership.

What are your general opinions of the car?

LOVE IT! i drove (and wrecked) a ford focus before my xD and I was blown away by the difference in driving experience. the xD has more pep and has a smoother ride. in my opinion, it's also a generally nice looking car.

Plus, I have met so many great people through scion and the options for customization are practically limitless. sites like this one are a good place to get info and opinions (as you have already seen)!

I love my xD Everything about it is great, no problems yet and hopefully nothing till its a few years old lol.

How big of a dog do you fit in the crate? I have a Westie, about 17lbs and I can fit her crate in the back just fine, however I don't leave her back there The crate, with her in it, is placed on the back seats for convience. I could quickly measure her crate if you'd like.

Thanks again for the opinions of your xD. I would not expect anything less as I am 100% in love with my gen. 2 xB.

As my avatar says, we have Whippets. They are sight hounds that are smaller than greyhounds, larger than italian greyhounds. They weigh about 30 pounds and stand about 21 inches tall at the shoulder. They won't ride in the crates, but the crates have to go folded up with us on trips.

The mes. of my crates are 36 inches long (side to side) and 24 inches wide (front to back). I believe they are going to be to large, but it they can fit lying down with the back seats slid forward and with the back still up, then the car could work. The reason the seats have to remain in the upright position is because the doggies will be riding in the back seat.

Thanks for your help!

The cargo area is right about the same size as the cargo area in the xB1, but maybe about 4-6 inches deeper...I have fit my dog in the trunk area, with his cage folded and strapped vertically to the back of the seats. There was enough room for him to move around back there by himself, without having to slide the seats forwards, and he stands more than 24" tall at the shoulder, and is about 50lbs. Hope this helps.

Actually thats the same size as my crate for my dog It fits just fine in the back. If it didn't, you can always scoot the back seat up, didja know that? They'd still be up but one of the two levers can scoot the seat forward a bit.

ChelsDS-

Are you lying the crates down flat, or standing it up on the edge? You are collapsing the crate correct?

Thanks!

It's completely collapsed in the back and flat on the trunk floor I would never put it on the side because it would most likely bang around back there lol!

Well, I'm not sure why it's better if the dogs sit on seats instead of an a nice flat surface (seats folded down), but I took the measurements for you.

With the rear seat-back locked upright (but not leaned back as far as it can go), and the entire rear seat slid forward to the max (rear seat bottom cushion not quite touching rear of front seat-backs), you have 39.25" side-to-side in the rear cargo area between the wheel wells, and 29.25" from the inside rear lip of the cargo area to the seat-back at the narrowest point. To be clear, it's a bigger space than that if you ignore the wheel wells and measure from the center of the back to the seat-backs, but you could lay a 39x29" object flat without a problem.

Also there is a largish gap between the flat cargo area and the rear seats, which would go away if you just gave in and folded those rear seats down

From the top of the rear cargo area lip to the bottom of the headliner, it's 27" vertically. Again, it's taller than that if you measure from the floor mat to the headliner, but 27" is the limitation of the open liftgate.

As I measured it and as I typed this, I still wondered why you don't just visit the dealer.
