Huh, I was wondering the same dang thing, as soon as I read his post - what's up with that? Same as the Corolla 1.8, and all the other smaller cars Toyota makes passes the grade except the xD??? And it's the smallest car of the bunch, 'cept the Yaris... you'd think a smaller car would do better with the same engine. Did they skimp on the Cat or something else in the exhaust system, or what?

I wonder too, Cylon xD. I noted on www.fueleconomy.gov, that the xD is only rated at 3 for Air Pollution Score. The Yaris receives a 6 and the Corolla a 7.3 out of a possible ten. Honda and Hyundai's usually rate 6 and above as well. There are some exotic rare-earth elements in the best Cat systems. I suspect this is one area where Toy may have slacked on the xD for cost savings.

Like the avatar, Cylon xD. I have likewise noted Scion's have a family resemblance to the Cylons.

my first tank is averaging 33.5 - 34 MPG amazingly. I'm very pleased. It's an auto.

OK, but then why skimp on the xD but not the Yaris, which is a less-expensive car than the xD - is it just because it is branded an actual Toyota??... this kinda bugs me now...

Thanks on the avatar, threw that together with an old paintshop program - I need to work on it a little though, I think i want to try to replace the xD in the avatar with an image of my actual car, for starters; also, on one of the other Scion forums, which allows a larger-sized avatar, I modified the image so there is also a red Cylon scanner light in the grill of the car in addition to the one on cylon itself... But, it's kind of hard to do too much artisticallly, and make it worth the effort, when you're only working with an 80x80 pixel image!

auto (sadly couldn't locate a manual RS1.0) 1st tank averaged 32.4 mpg. I have 18's, TRD exhaust and TRD air filter. I am VERY pleased since I drive 124 miles / day had .8 gal left when I filled.

Sorry, this may a little long. But to sum it up quickly, I now average right at 32 mpg and that's combo driving city and freeway.

I now have 13,000 miles on the car, bought it in February. We went on a 4,000 mile road trip through 7 states. California gas get the worst milage. Went through 3 tanks and got the worst mileage, below 30mpg. Wyoming, Colorado and Utah got me 36 mpg and that was very consistant throughout the 3 states.

I live in Oregon and as of July 1st we now have to have 10% ethonol in our gas. I seen an immedate DROP in performance and mileage. I went from 34 down to 30 for the fist 3 or 4 tanks. It has seemed that the computer has "adjusted" for the new gas and finally settled at a average mileage of 32 mpg.

Sad that we have to pay more for gas that doens't even get us a far as it used to. We end up using more gas and spending more money, seems like our tax dollars hard at work.

I tried a different gas station this time ( a no-name station locally to me) and does not say it has ethanol and lo and behold, my mileage this time hit 34.7 mpg (up from 30 mpg) Looks like I found my new favorite gas station, it doesn't hurt that it has the lowest prices too...

my second tank has 2 bars left on the fuel gauge yet the computer says I have 21 miles left in the tank. which one is more accurate? Because both of them can't be right....

If the computer says 21 miles, I'm usually down to one bar by then. Hmm.

Well, I'm extremely jealous of most of you people getting incredible mileage with your xD's - I'm still pulling my hair out just trying to break the 30 mpg barrier with mine. I drive almost all local roads, most of them back roads in the country, about 30 miles per day round trip to work and back. If I beat it, I get 24 mpg, if I nurse it like a blue-hair, or put premium gas in it, I can squeeze almost, but not quite, 29 mpg out of it. Even traveling 175 miles round trip on the PA Turnpike at 75 mph and the rest local miles, I only got 28.5. I don't know, but we must have a LOT of ethanol in our gas around here in Lancaster to get such "crappy" mileage...

Maybe if I convert my car to be able to run on cow manure and road apples from all the amish buggies, I might finally make it past that 30 mpg mark....

that is WIERD. like you said I guess it has to be something with your gas...?

maybe some cars just work better than others.

a mystery...at least to me.

When I nurse mine, I go to around 34 mpg and I only assume it will be better when it breaks in, in another 4200 miles

What you're getting is about average. Take away the exaggerations and whatnot, and high 20's is about the average,

It seems to me it all depends how and where you drive. Living in CA, Bay Area with almost 10 months old car I am averaging 33-34 MPG with freeway/city split 70/30. Best recorded MPG, going back from Tahoe ski resorts - 48 MPG, on the way there - 28 (worst recorded). Chains and severe snow conditions are included. Using grade 91 fuel, 2 oil changes, 13k miles.

OK, well see, you say your worst gas mileage was 28, and that was from the bay area to lake tahoe, which is probably all uphill, I'm sure! But that is about the MAX I can get with majority highway driving AND 91 octane gas (28.9), and I'm in the eastern lowlands, where the terrain only varies about 200 feet, just some gently rolling hills! Now, I only have 5500 miles on my car, but still... and I know that the mileage I'm seeing is within the estimated ratings of 27 and 32, but it just seems that enough people are getting over 30 mpg that I should be able to do something to improve mine just a little. It's really only a psycological goal for me, I just want to be able to say I get 30 mpg with my car...

I have tried one of those programmed gas-saving modules from Voloperformance.com (not like the resistor types on eBay) and that made no difference, I put a performance air filter on the engine in place of the stock filterbox, no help... I've even tried Hypermiling, where I coast in neutral at idle as much as possible, doesn't work... Sigh, all I want is about 2 more mpg, dang it!!

I'm not complaining, I'm just whining a little... My Dodge Ram pickup gets 9.5 mpg...

Heh, sorry to hear that about your car. Only options that I can think of that you didn't mention in your previous post are: kick passengers out, remove junk from the trank area and remove spare tire/back seats to bring total weight down. And, I don't know if it makes that of a huge difference, I am driving auto with VSC installed.
Good luck!

We have a bit over 2000 miles now and we've been averaging 32mpg (actual calculations, the computer = lies lol). This is on a manual trans and stock wheels/suspension.

The funny thing is, we beat this thing to death =O When I drive "normal" (grandma style) is when the computer starts to show me hitting 28 mpg. I love this car!
