Hey guys! My name's Chris. Saw you're guys's post and decided to go ahead and paint my wheels, brake calipers, and front grille/scion logo. I painted the 17" alloys striped powder-coat gun metal, which meshes well with the lip of polished silver/gray. The calipers are now red, and the front grille is red with a gun metal scion logo. Next I will do my fog-light covers and rear symbols. I am blacking out my back lights...smoking them, if any of you know how to do it. And getting new halo or HID lights in the next couple weeks. I also just put in my K&N Filter that day which made a great difference along with my blue interior lighting kit. Well here are all the pics in steps of the car to help all of you trying to do this as well!

My old wheel with painted flat black scion cap on it.

My old brake caliper.

My dogs the night before our work-on-Scion day haha.

Painted black Scion cap, on my Peavey Triple XXX Amp lol.

My girlfriend cleaning off my wheels.

Now she's taping them up with me...

...so they end up looking like this, if you are following this design!

Then spraypaint even coats about 2 to 3 times and peel tape to look like this. Our paint was DupliColor High Performance Wheel Paint - Graphite. The cap paint was black high-temp DupliColor barbeque paint.

This is my front grille after we painted it red with the DupliColor Red Caliper paint that we used on the calipers, and painted the Scion logo with the sparkely wheels paint which was a great idea.

My car the next day.

New grille and logo painted on the car.

Another side picture, with my K&N Stickers lol, from purchasing my filter the day before.

New stripe painted wheel powdercoat graphite sparkles w/ factory gloss polish gray and flat black scion cap with chrome nut bolts plus the red caliper and rotor!

Me on my car being blinded by Arizona sunlight.
Anyway! Please respond to this and tell me what you think. Also...add my band @ www.myspace.com/dangersilent please! Thanks a lot!
Also let me know if you have any questions on the process itself!

after about 15 hrs of work i have finally gotten the base coat perfect but i can't get the clear coat from turning foggy when it starts drying. I'm using krylon triple thick because two other people suggested it but it keeps turning white. any ideas on what to do or if i should just buy anothr kind of clear coat nd redo the clear? plz help
i use duplicolor wheel clear coat. sometimes it fogs up when drying too. if you let it fully dry and cure, the fogginess should go away. spray the clear on and let it dry overnight. if it keeps fogging, then go ahead and use a different brand.

Also I'm planning on redoing my wheels next week, but I was planning on just using regular exterior paint rather than the wheel coating in order to obtain a glossyer look. Will this be okay? or do I need to use something designed to withstand high heat?
Dre's rims on page 10 are my favorites hands down. The ones with just the spokes painted dont look good to me. If your going to mod your stockies they should look factory fresh when your done. Otherwise whats the point.
Also, has anyone considered using a small sand blaster to sand the tight curves?

take a lil drive, like 10-15 mins.
not all freeway, do some driving around town (stop and go)
then get out and feel your wheels.
theyre pretty hot from the heat coming off the brakes.
the wheel paint is slightly heat resistant ( idk if its as much as the engine paint) but it does resist heat more than normal paint would.
so i wouldnt risk using regular paint becuase this project is a pain in the ****.
its just really time consiming with the sanding and taping and everything. i would never want to have to do this again.
if u want a glossy look. get the gloss wheel paint, and also get the high heat clear coat. do a couple coats of clear after the wheel paint dries. Then wax your rims regularly just like u would ur car.
Thats what i did and they always looked great.

F%^& THIS PROJECT UNLESS YOU ARE PAINTING THE SPOKES ONLY!!! OTHERWISE YOU ARE IN FOR A MAJOR FREAKING ORDEAL! Unless you are a skilled painter with painting experience leave this job to the pros. Please let me explain.
Powder coating cost for high gloss black powder coat rim.
$18.50 per rim for tire removal, remount, and balance (Walmart Auto.)
$55.00 per rim for sandblasting, and powder coating (Local Powder Coater)
Total Cost $294.00 plus tax
Total Time 1 day if well planned
Total Time you busting your a** sanding, taping, priming, sanding, taping, painting, opps one rim doesn't look good, try to remove paint by sanding, doesn't work, try to remove paint with aircraft remover, total cluster, now decide to have them powder coated = 0 freakin nightmarish hours.
IF YOU WANT YOUR WHOLE RIM PAINTED YOU WILL SPEND $200 in paint, primer, sanding stuff, tape, and other materials. Why in God's name would you do that to have your paint start pitting in 6 months or get damaged the first time you replace a tire. FORGET THIS PROJECT.
I spent all weekend sanding, priming, sanding, getting friends to help, and my rims are in worse condition then they were when I started. Obviously I don't have the skill and know how for this project so I'm going to have them powder coated and cut my losses wich are about $123.00 after I get a refund for the unused materials. This project can only be accomplish properly by a skilled individual, and even then it takes at least three day sun up to sun down. These rims are a major b**ch to sand, and if you read up you will see that even the guy who wrote this diy had to redo his rims. SAVE YOURSELF THE HORRIBLE HASSLE AND HAVE THEM POWDER COATED. While your rims are in the shop paint your calipers. That's a doable project that will take about a day to do properly.
Thanks for reading my rant. I hope you make a better call on this then I did.

The drop is hotchkis and the springs have about 12k on stock shocks. I think the reason it looks lower is because I am on 225/45/17 tires. No I have never had any rubbing issues what so ever.
Yes in the pics they may "resemble" the spare but, in reality the pics really lightened up the paint color and they are a bit darker.

Hey guys it's me, the author of the thread. Well I sold my tC more than a year ago and I haven't been on here since then.
If you guys have q's or anything the best way to get a hold of me is via email:
robbdizzle@gmail.com
and just put "painting scion wheels" or something similar in the subject line so it doesn't go to my junk folder.
PEACE!!
