It's important to realize Toyota is a business, a very well-run business. In order to remain profitable they need to keep the cost of production down, especially on very inexpensive cars with slim profit margins like this. Part of what makes the Scions cheap to build is the fact that they are built in one spec basically, not with 3 different engine choices, turbo and non-turbo etc. This streamlines the process and saves money. The fact is, beleive it or not, most people don't want a turbo or a factory limited slip in a $14k car and/or don't want to pay extra for it.
That's part of the reason the tuner community evolved, so people with $14,000 cars can spend $4000 to get 20 more horsepower and still lose when they try to race mustangs.
If you want forced induction, Blitz makes a supercharger and Greddy and others make turbo kits. There is also a TRD LSD for this drivetrain, though it is expensive and a little hard to find. With enough money anything is possible man.

You have to remember the purpose of Scion's existence. Toyota wants to capture a consumer for life... starting with the Scion, graduating to the Toyota and eventually the Lexus.
First and foremost Scions need to be easy to buy, without hassles. Secondly, they need to be in fairly limited supply to maintain demand so that people will continue to WANT them throughout their life cycle.
I would love to see Scion evolve into the performance-oriented arm of Toyota, with the T-brand becoming the sensible brand and Lexus remaining the upper-echelon.
The reality is that Scions need to remain affordable because not many high school/college students can afford a $35,000 pocket rocket. Also, the more options, etc, that are available the more complicated the purchase becomes.
Easy does it... a few colors and a few choices and you can buy a car just like you are buying your lunch. With a great car buying experience under your belt you are going to keep returning every time you are hungry... unless you get bored of the food!
I am sure that Scion has some surprises that will show us down the road. We can only wait and watch.
