1983 Toyota Starlet ... now a SCCA Solo II Racer
Name:
Jeff Halsey
State:
Massachusetts
City:
Milford
Model:
KP61
Year:
1983
Part 1: Interior Modifications:
Corbeau Forza seats with dual Corbeau 4-point standard harnesses
Autopower cage
Quick disconnet steering wheel
Relocated battery to rear seat with master shutoff near driver
Custom support tray with cover over rear seats & battery
Part 2: Exterior Modifications:
Suspension:
AE86 Corolla GTS front suspension case w/ case shortened 2.5", Koni adjustable from rear of SW chassis MR2, Cusco front and rear strut/shock tower braces, as well as a Cusco front camber plate.
In rear, KG/MM race springs, 5.5 kg/mm from Japan with Gabriel rear shocks from a 82-92 Camaro.
All rubber in the front suspension has been replaced w/ stock parts from Toyota. I am experimenting with some universal Energy Suspension components to switch over to polyurethane.
All rear still needs fresh rubber/polyurethane.
Engine:
4K-E (EFI), 1.3L 4 cyl eng w/ solid lifter conversion. Waiting to install new Kent Camshaft and uprated valve springs.
K&N Intake.
Drivetrain:
Aluminum flywheel w/ replaceable wear surface.
Stiffer clutch fingers, solid clutch disk
K51 \\\TRD close ratio transmission
U code 4.10 and 4.30 rear differential, with \\\TRD LSD
Wheels/Tires:
14x6" Mistubishi Starion wheels, with 195/60/R14 Falken Azenis tires
Brakes:
AE86 Corolla front disc brakes, advanced Hawk street pads (good for auto-x)
Rear drum w/ new hardware
Pictures follow ...
This was my old white Starlet, I owned it back when I was racing in Southern California in Solo II:

The group I pitted with was a Toyota group ... almost 6-7 would race in the Starlets ... we used to joke about it being like a TRD Starlet Cup Car race (TRD junkies know what I'm refering to.

No mods to the new engine (yet).

AE86 (Corolla) front brakes, stainless steel brake lines, Corolla strut shortened 2.5" (Thanks Chuck Wade), Cusco camber plates and strut bars (Front and back) from Japan (Thanks Bulletproof Auto in Torrance, CA).

Had to roll the inner fender lip with a baseball bat to gain enough clearance.

Removable wheel, I'm not as young as I used to be (25?) to crawl in and out of the racing seats.

Did I mention I relocated the battery to underneath the rear seat? If you look at the interior shot, you can see the cutoff switch.
This is the third Starlet I've owned. I love 'em. 40 rwd hp (my old white one), super light, and a lot of fun to drive after a few basic suspension mods. At one race,I was a couple of seconds off of a BMW M3's time ... and she was a past national champion!
Ok, so now I've owned:
1982 Toyota Celica (The 22-R Rally machine!)
1995 Toyota Corolla Wagon (******* Wagon)
1982 Toyota Starlet (White Widow ... don't ask)
1983 Toyota Starlet (Tan ... parts car, now buddies project)
1983 Toyota Starlet (Red EFI monster)
1985 Toyota MR2 (wife needed a racecar)
2005 Scion tC (We broke the option button for TRD gear)
