Default Shift Boot ?

hey guys. i recently just signed up on this website and have been getting info from this forum for a while now. i tried searching, and found some stuff on my question but the question itself was never answered. my question is how exactly do you change the shift boot? i've taken the assembly apart and everything. i was just wondering did you guys just take the old boot off and staple your new one back on to that plastic piece or what? i have a SS btw and i don't want to do that other method where you just adjust your old shift boot because i have a brand new one. sorry if this is in the wrong section!

so it just clips in place using the old plastic piece? cause when i took the assembly apart the shift boot was stapled to that plastic piece. so i would have to remove the old shift boot and just use that same plastic piece for the install? or am i just totally confused? lol
