DIY: 1zz TB swap
just letting you guys know that i am doing this and will be posting pics tomorrow. I decided that since a lot of guys ask about it on here but have to go to other forums to read up on it I thought it would be good to put one up on here. I used the write up on club xb as my guide. Before I start getting flames, I know it has been dyno proven to ad no hp, but the butt dyno likes it and that's what I like to use. And going by the internal combustion engine theory, more air and fuel= more power. My plan is that it will ad up down the road. For those of you wanting to know where I got mine from, ebay. Look up 01 or 02 corolla TB should be pretty cheap. I think the earlier years used MAP sensors so there is a big extension coming off the top of those that need to be dealt with so the 01 and 02 years are less of a hassle. Also make sure that it is a 3 bolt pattern with a DBC system NOT DRIVE BY WIRE
So far:
Disconnect battery
Disconnect valve cover vent tube and maf
Disconnect EVAP breather tube from TB
Remove intake either box or CAI
Disconnect all sensors
Unbolt trans dipstick from trans to be able to pry it out of your way if you need to, like me.
Unclip the PITA clamps holding the coolant tubes to the throttle body (when reassembling I am going to bypass the throttle body providing cooler air into the engine)
Unclip the throttle linkage from the throttle wheel
Unbolt the throttle linkage bracket from the throttle body
Unbolt the throttle body 2 nuts and 1 bolt and remove from the engine (when i mocked up the 1zz to IM, and opened the butterfly, i ran my finger around the opening to the IM, and i think its a perfect match. my theory is being backed up because looking at the old TB for the 1nz there is quite of bit room from where the o-ring sits on the old TB to the mouth. so in number form, 1nz TB outlet to IM 45mm, 1nz IM opening 50mm, 1zz TB outlet to IM 50mm)
Splice into brake booster hose near intake using 3/8 T for the booster hose evap solenoid
Cap off the breather fitting on top of the 1zz TB using a 5/8 bypass cap
So I went to ace hardware and bought a 2.5" metal hole saw and .25" pilot bit and 12x24" sheet of aluminum and pretty thin and ordered a 1zz TB gasket from autzone
So far that is what I have done and will post more tomorrow as straighten this up with pics and add more.

Sorry, had to watch my kid most of the day so didn't get much done.
Got the sandwich plate made, picked up the 1zz gasket and ground off material on the 1zz TB to use the stock bolts on the IM. Wouldve had it done today if I had all day to work on it. Right now I am trying to figure out how the hell I can get the 'T' into the brake booster hose. The hose is SUPER stiff and doesn't want to bend all that much. I may end up swapping the whole hose out with a more flexible piece.

Yes I am using a CAI, I'm using the k&n typhoon. No you won't have to replace it. Our engines won't out flow the tube or the maf. If anything after about 600 miles I've noticed that there is kind of a sluggishness under very light throttle with my CAI since the tube diameter is larger then stock and slows down the air moving over the maf so if my theory is that this larger TB will regain that response. Also a misconception, the IM inlet is not 45mm, it is 50mm, and the 1zz is 50. Strange why the 1nz uses a 45mm.
Everything is back together and running good. Let it idle for about 15 or 20 min., still ideling a little high around 1500 without a/c on. Around 800 or 900 with a/c on and I bypassed the coolant lines running into the TB since I live in AZ and it doesn't ever get cold enough for them. Also my CAI rubber coupler went on without any problems. Does have better throttle response and revs easier. As far as the corrola intake on our engines, I've read about it, but up to the point where the person says "it will work" and nothing else. I havnt been able to find anything else out.
I have all the pictures, but its late and I'm tired. Tomorrow I am at college all day, literally so probably tuesday ill get around to cleaning this up. If anyone has questions, feel free to post.
Well guys, spent the weekend dealing with this cold but my computer took a crap yesterday and lost all the pics I had to finish this thread. I have my phone but not sure if I can upload to photo bucket from it. And I am most certainly not going to tear my engine back apart to to take more pics so I might take some pics with things back together and point things out from there. Opinions?
Im hoping to try this mod with this months bonus from work and im already running a spacer so im gonna take it off to mock it up to and ill make sure to take lots of pics. So any and all advice and tips I can find will be a big help.
