New 2012 with front end clunking noise
Noise: clunk, clank, tock
Area: front suspension/steering
Miles first happened: 1000
Mods: none
At first I hear a tock right after I pull away from stop. The noise comes on mostly during really slow speed turns. The noise sometimes can become a clunk. It's not predictable and can't be replicated at will.
When I took the car to the dealer, they said it was something about the brake. The made some adjustments (the brake felt tighter afterwards) and I could't hear the noise when tech rode with me on a test drive.
A few days later, the noise came back. It is now louder and no longer a low speed occurrence. At normal speed, the clunk/clank comes on when sometimes driving over a rough patch of road, potholes, and bumps. Still not a 100% consistent pattern.
Have an appointment to go see the dealer again tomorrow.
Anybody here with the similar symptoms? TIA.
I think with two more appointments without a resolution, I'm qualified for protection under the Maryland Lemon Law.

These things are for the most part rock solid, but like anything sometimes things happen and hopefully toyota/scion will take care of the problem and get you back to feeling good about your purchase. Good Luck and maybe try different toyota/scion dealerships for a second look.
Bad Strut Mount? Bad Strut? Bad End Link? Windshield Creek Noise?

Just cured the clunking noise our Xb made when doing slow speed turns. The wife likes to use the power steering to turn the tires with the brakes on - I tell her to do this with the car rolling, but why would she listen to me... Anyway... Lots of clunking noises while turning the steering wheel at zero speed.
I was recently backing out of my sons driveway after a visit and grounded the front end on the stupid curb they have, which is typical for the neiborhood. My Bad, I forgot about it.
So I jacked it up when I got home to see what I had done and the damage was quite minor, small scrapes on a couple of bolt heads along the front frame rail right under the bumper. While I had it on the jack stands, I went under with the torque wrench set at 76 ft-lbs and tightened up those bigger bolts that you can see under the frame near the steering rack. There are 2 sizes 17mm and 19mm (or was that bigger?). Anyway, the smaller 17mm bolts did tighten slightly and the clunking has gone.
Summary: Tighten the smaller 17mm chassis bolts around the front suspension to 76 ft-lbs (which is the wheel torque on one of our cars)
Try it, if you are having this issue, and let us all know if it worked for you or not.
