Default Weird question....

I just want to know why the peeps here go larger than the OEM 17"s?

What is wrong with 17"s?

Do the larger sizes give you better performance handling and comfort?

they go bigger because they have small genitalia.

or they go bigger for looks and because they love the dub look or whatever.

going bigger has minimal performance advantages. wheels, tires and brake rotors are the main parts of a cars "unsprung" weight. this is weight that is not controlled by a car's suspension, therefore you want to minimalize it as much as possible.

larger heavier wheels make the car work harder to do everything, accelerate, stop and turn. the increased rotational mass lowers whp, and handling responses. also, larger wheel and tire combos ride more harshly than oem 17's and can harm the suspension. they will also throw off the readings of the speedometer and odometer.

the only potential advantage is that wider tires have better traction because of a larger contact patch with the pavement. but you can get wider tires for rims that are still only 17 inches.

Hey DRAX, Whats the widest tire can you get for the OEM 17"s?

I should change my tC rims and install it to my Rolla, Then buy new 17"s!

What is the lightest 17" rim I could get? Does someone have it here on SL?

Thanks for the info!

Think this will go well with a limo tinted, TRD lowered BSP tC?

The 1st one is 17 and the rest are 18, Do 18"s still get a good ride if it weighs a bit less than OEM?

i have no idea to any of those questions really. most people put 225/45/17 tires on oem rims without any problems fitting. as far as lightest, i think the lightest i've heard are 16 pounds. and do whatever you please with your stock rims so long as it is tasteful. lot of people sell them, or maybe keep it as a spare or set for the winter...well, you don't have winter in nevada do you?

well, none of your pictures work. yes, there could possibly be some 18 in wheels that are lighter than the oem rims, it would just be harder to find a set that are. you don't need to limit your self to only wheels are that are lighter than stock. if you find a set that you really like and go great with the look of your car, then sure, get them. or if they allow for much wider tires to be put on, that is also a performance benefit. i was just telling you the follie of idiots who think that when it comes to wheels, they should get the biggest shiniest blinged out spinners they can fit, or force onto the car and wonder suddenly why the car suddenly isn't responsive, and rubbing and so on.

225 should be as far as you go on the stockers.

no use really asking my opinion what wheels look good and which ones don't. i'm a big picture type of person in this area, i can only decide when they are actually on the car whether i like them or not.

if you want some ideas of nice looking rims, go find the ...black sand pearl cult picture thread. it is a thread of all bsp tc's, with all sorts of different wheels and drops and tints and what not. you can get a better idea of what kinds of wheel pattarns and designs work.

i'm all for stylin and profilin, but putting on big wheels usually sounds and looks like somebody trying to overcompensate for something.

Define 'big'. My definition of 'big' would be putting 20s on a tC.
18s look alright with me. Heck, sometimes they even look stock.
19s done TASTEFULLY look good too. (Although they do hinder performance.)

When you say "looks like somebody trying to overcompensate for something." I laugh because it reminds me of those huge lifted trucks."Big lifted trucks...little tiny...".

What I think when I see 20's or larger.. and especially the "donk" crap, is someone trying to say "look how much money I have.. you can tell cause of my wheels".. which actually means "look how maxed my credit card is" :D I say this because I cant see how anyone could look at a set of wheels that big on a car (like 24's on a buick) and actually think they look anything but horribly stupid.

But, on the flip side.. some people obviously think that looks cool I guess.. so whatever floats thier boat.

nothing in excess. and everything should be nice and proportionate. a former co-worker of mine with a 5spd saturn coupe of some kind put on a set of light weight 15 inch racing wheels that looked really nice and fit the car just great. he was smart enough to see that he doesn't need the biggest possible wheels he can squeeze under his car to make it look good. form and function are not always compromise, you can have plenty of both.
