carbon, I was just using that as an example that downshifting helps to the guy saying i didnt know how to drive. listen.. i dont have time to sit here and argue all day.. Ill just watch what i say on here cuz of people like you that make negative comments that are off topic. I should of known better when i saw you were allready in the op. I did hesitate to do it.
How about we stop using opinion of who would win and do some research. Car and driver, and everyone knows their times are usually worse than what a normal driver can do.
A SC tC struggles to get into the 14s. Few have psted time slips of 14.7 I am one that has, but I had 9.5 pulley and a host of other mods.
Here is what a STOCK GTI can do:
For all-out acceleration, DSG has a launch-control feature in which the engine holds at 3000 rpm and, when the brake pedal is released, takes off with a tuned amount of clutch slip and wheelspin. Using this method, we managed a 6.0-second 0-to-60-mph sprint and a 14.7-second quarter-mile at 95 mph, even though we thought the computer allowed too much wheelspin.
THE GTI WILL WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So your saying a 118HP Lotus ELISE is slower than a 160HP Scion tC????? (if the tC could "put the power to the ground")
Or say a Hummer HI with 300HP is faster than a tC with 160HP?????
HP has VERY LITTLE to do with it. There is vehicle weight, gearing, transmission, power delivery and a host of other things. HP NUMBERS DONT MEAN POOP!!!
Horsepower does mean something. But its power to weight ratio thats important. The reason why a Lotus with less power would be faster then a TC is because its light as hell. So yes hp is important but so is weight. If we had a 2000lb Scion TC with 160hp, it would be pretty damn quick.

I raced a GTI back when I had my stock 06 tc with the s/c and I beat it, on the track. Not saying that the GTI isn't faster, but most of the time the driver makes all the difference. The s/c tc and the GTI put down about the same power, about mid-180s. What makes the GTI faster is drivetrain.
