Default Got a Rattle

When there is any bass in any song on the radio or on a cd I get a rattle in the passengers door panel. I can get it to stop by applying just a little pressure to the door panel right where the door lock and window switch is. I think I am going to take it to the dealer to have them fix this cause it has been happeneing since I got the car two weeks ago. Well my question, this is covered under the warranty, right? and What do i tell them when i take it in, I have never had to take a car in to a dealer to have something fixed that is under warranty? This is of course my first new car, and what a great choice I made for my first.

If the audio is dealer- or factory-installed, it should certainly be dealer-fixed (I'm assuming at the get-go that you don't have the bass turned way up!). This probably has a simple fix, such as checking and/or adjusting the existing fasteners or mounting, and adding some cushioning if need be. There's also a snowball's chance that the speaker in that panel is blown, but this is unlikely if your hand pressure on the panel itself resolves it.

By all means, give the dealer the chance to fix it. Try to give them as much info as you have about the issue; they should put this in their records, for future use in case it may affect other vehicles.

It's a good idea to keep written records of anything - even minor - that comes up during the warranty period; if something fails after the warranty, you'll have the record to show that it was an issue - even if not a problem - during the warranty period. Of course, it's a good idea to let the dealer know about these things when you experience them.

Hope this helps.

I have the exact same rattle, glad to knwo it's not just me.

Your warranty shuold cover everything, you may want to have the technician sit inside the car with you as you try to recreate the rattle -- that way you waon't get a "we couldn't find it" response.

Good luck, and please update us on what ends up happening.

EXACT same thing going on w/ me. I can't stand it!! I already took the pannel off once (just cuz I dont like dealers) and adjusted some things, but it is still there! I cant stand it! If and when you guys do get it fixed let me know what it was! I have tested unlocking, locking the door to see if that was it, and w/ the window up and down, but it seems to still do it under all conditions unless I apply a little bit of pressure right by the window switches. Someone figure it out!!!

I have that rattle....only mine seems unrelated to bass, it seems to have a plastic buzz at certain pitches....men on talk radio seem to really set it off. If i push on the plastic to the right of the speaker, it goes away.

I have been to the dealer twice over this, and all they have done is jerk me around. The first time they "couldn't recreate" it...even though it is really freaking obvious. So the second time, i had both the service rep and the tech in the car. The rep tells me..."ok...i hear it...it's pretty subtle...it's going to be hard to pin it down". So of course....he calls at the end of the day and leaves a message saying he still can't recreate it....even though he had earlier admitted he heard it!

I keep getting these letters from the dealship saying if you can't answer "COMPLETELY SATISFIED" then give the service director a call. I've called several times...but of course he's never in his office.

Okay well wrtiing this has gotten me sufficiently steamed....so i'm going to try calling again.

If anyone gets the dealer to fix this please post. Thanks!

Well I think I will call and make an appointment hopefully for tomorrow afternoon since I get off early. Does anyone have any idea of how long it will take for them to fix this, a general guesstimate, cause the "Short Bus" is my only ride so I wont have any other way to go.

I can relate to the annoyance of buzzes and rattles in a car. Murphys law states that you won't be able to recreate the buzz when a tech is sitting in the car. So... what I would do is to go to a wal-mart or equivalent and pick up a roll of the thick weatherstripping material. The half inch by half inch is what I am picturing. Apply it around the speaker so that it pushes up tight against the door panel when it is reinstalled.

Dynamat as another suggested applied to the back side of the plastic panel would also work, but that's 20 bucks a door for materials, and I'm all for a cost-effective solution whenever possible. Keep in mind when you are chasing down rattles that its not something common to the scion line, heck my wife's IS300 has a couple too, and that interior is tight, with less than 5k miles on the clock they were there.

However you do it just be sure to clean the areas well with somethign like rubbing alcohol (not acetone) and let it air dry so the adhesive sticks well. Do it right the first time. After we get a car to mod of our own I should have some more insight on trouble areas and remedies.

After getting a hold of my dealerships service manager.....i took my car in yesterday for the third time on this issue...

This time they actually fixed the problem. They told me the speaker mounting tabs weren't secure properly. So they fixed that and put padding in there.

It worked! No more buzz!

I think it is weird that both xA's and xB's are both having this problem since the door panels are completely different. My friend just bought an xB...i was driving it and noticed it had the same plastic buzz as mine did....only the volume had to be quite high in hers to start the buzzing...

bumps and rattles are a part of all cars... all of them have them.. now me i'd still take it to the dealer and try to get them to fix it... if its the plastic to the right of the speaker open the door panel and see if you can figure it out.. try recreating it with the door panel off maybe something is loos on the door panel something that can be fixed with rubber cement or something... but u gotta remember ur not gonna be able to stop all rattles they are inevitable and will happen.

I have a rattle too!!! It's under the driver's side foot well. Not really a rattle, but tapping when I hit bumps...like a bolt fell out.

I had the buzzing noise with hi bass on my new XB too...I took it back to the dealership twice and got the same answers from thet ech dept. that a lot of you guys have posted...They either didn't hear it, or couldn't pin-point where it was coming from...

I decided to do some investigating and I found my rattle was coming from the top dash speaker grate...There was also a subtle buzzing coming from the door speaker in the passenger door...

I removed the grates on the speakers and applid a small square cut piece of some foam rubber (a paper towel folded will do fine also) and attached it to the speaker itself with some black electric tape to mask the color behind the grates...

My problem was solved and it's been fine now for the past month...Also, theres no visible evidence of the foam rubber or tape being on the speakers, you can hardly see it through the grates...

*note* this also took care of my buzzing noise I was getting from the dash when I accelerated...I saw a lot of people posting on that problem as well...

I hope this can help out some of you guys, and maybe save you some frustration of dealing with the unhelpful dealerships

Resurrecting this thread...

Wondering if anyone has gone to the dealer to have that passenger door rattle fixed? I took mine to the dealer and they said the only thing they could do was replace the speaker even though it isn't the speaker rattling, but the door panel. Maybe I should try another dealer...

I have a rattle in my drivers side door, like an earlier poster noted, it's not restricted to high bass, men talking on the radio set it off too. i have an appointment at the dealership on Tuesday morning.

Hopefully they can take care of it. ~fingers-crossed~
