How much would 4 or 5 clearcoats cost? Is it more or less noticable on a black xB?

A few things.

Most cars come from the factory with a slight amount of orangepeel. It is actually the desired finish in most cases, as a little orange peel will reflect light better. Check out most Dodges, they seem to have the "worst" case from what I've seen.

Also, black is the hardest color to paint, and shows the imperfections easier than other colors.

If the orangepeel really bothers you, pay a body shop to wet sand and then buff out the clear.

I want to know what cars you guys have had that didn't have orange peel? I'm an amateur painter (yep I got a booth) and I have yet to see a car stock that didn't have orange peel. it's caused by applying too thin of a coat of paint at a time... the opposite (too much paint per coat) would cause runs. because they use robots in almost all car manufacturing, it's a fine balence between heavy orange peel, and lots of runs.

With how old those cars are, I would have to say that either they've been repainted at one time or another, or that they have had the orange peel worn down over the years by polishing. I think that it might be pore noticeable on some newer cars since they use more coats to make the paint thicker (the OEM paint is lead free now, which causes loads of problems down the line).
