Default Left my sunroof open...

So, after coming home last night, i forgot to close the sunroof, but it was only opened to the slant position. Woke up this morning to a massive downpour, and although not much water reached the interior, the piece of leather/clothes on the roof, is now pretty wet. Is there anyway i can dry it, or is it just best for it to let it dry in the sun? O, and ya, i know, i was dumb for letting this happen.

P.S. I hope this is in the correction section, mods, plz move if i'm in the wrong one.

Wet/dry vac: to get out a majority of the H2O.

Can you leave all the doors open for 24hrs or more?

I would seriously recommend some kind of odor killer ASAP. Once mold sets in, your car will stink forever.

I would just let the headliner dry naturally. Any liquid water has dripped out of it, and vacuuming it will not remove remaining moisture but might pull and stretch the fabric.

If your sunroof it like mine, the installer removed the factory fiberboard roof shell and stripped off the tough material that is bonded to it. The shell was cut to fit around the sunroof, its track and its motor. The sunroof was installed, the shell replaced, and then thin mousehair headliner fabric was stretched over everything.

Unlike the factory headliner, this thin stretched headliner fabric spans a lot of air spaces. It can easily be poked through, it tends to flutter over 40 mph with the sunroof open, and it may eventually stretch, loosen, come loose from the edges, etc.

Getting your fabric wet may have done all this. It may also have damaged the headliner shell, which is pressed fibers and may not be water-resistant. I would be interested to know what your outcome is.

I have considered buying a new factory roof shell while the cars are still in production, and asking the sunroof installer to do a special experimental installation. I propose that the new shell be cut and then built up with fillets and wedges of more shell-type material so that the new headliner can be bonded to it, not stretched over it. And the new headliner should be the tough carpet-like material like the factory uses.

That seems to be a good idea. I think i'll just let the liner dry by itself and see what happens afterwards. Hopefully, it wont be too deformed or have any smell, but i'll definetly post the results, although it might be small. And as for your proposal, please keep me updated on how that works out, sounds pretty interesting.

Here is the factory headliner rigid shell, upside down, with headliner material visible around the ege, handgrip bolt holes, and the dome light in the middle:

Imagine cutting a rectangle 2'-6" wide by 4'-0" long out of the middle to fit around a sunroof and its track and motor. Then stretch fabric from the edges over the high points to cover the mechanisms.

Good stuff. Hm.. its been about a while, and so far, i havent smelled anything horrible and it seems like the integrity of the line overall is ok, so hopefully i'll be fine for now, but your work seems interesting enough.
