Thanks
The TRD supposedly has a different screen and has a synthetic filter layer as opposed to the paper of the stocker.
I've read a lot on this, and decided the extra money was not worth it.
It's likely a higher-flowing filter, with possibly less filtering for smaller particulate - which is good for racing.

Stick with the OEM for less than half the price.

Glad to help...
My mechanic also told me this weekend that the tC filter from Toyota is about 1-inch longer (taller) than other SCIONs and other makers of some tC filters. they cut it open to see if it was different in other ways, and found nothing of note. It likely has more oil in there for startups - that's our guess anyways.
Stick with OEM filters, and get a good oil. I'm using M1 (Mobil1)

Default filter choice

I just got my xb and it is almost time for oil change. Every one says use only toyota filter? I have a 83 toyota pickup with 211,000 miles on it and it hasen't had a toyota filter on it since the factory one came off for the first oil change 23 years ago and it runs like a new one. Oh did I mention it was a farm truck for its first 18 years and has had a very rough life. So will my xb live if I don't use a toyota filter?

^ It will live well and long, all things being equal. Toyo filters are highly regarded...

about the "initial oil change" for new cars, this applies to mostly older cars. From what the dealer said, our cars have already gone through the break in period, our responsibility is not to push it as indicated in the manual for the first X number of miles.

maybe this is why there are no metal debris found in the filter in the first oil change.

good job on the information post on filters

Why?
You can buy what you like, but the Toyota filters are outstanding.
Why waste money?
That's the conclusion for K&N oil filters, FWIW.
Get the Toyota YZZF1 from TRDSPARKS.COM - 10-paks for ~$35.
If you've been reading, you'll save some trouble and money by not using K&N.

Microns filtered is only 1/2 of the filter equation.
Flow is as important if not more-so.
You're all entitled to use the filters of your choosing, just don't waste money on what you think is a better solution.
It not only may be less effective, but more expensive as well.
Do the research - you might be changing your mind.

Just off the top of my head, and I suspect that the info could be researched on-line, I cannot believe that there are ANY clearances in ANY current automobile engines that are even approaching less than 30 microns.

In my mind, that means that a filter that does not pass particulates larger than 15 microns will protect current engines more than adequately.

Filters that try to filter even smaller particles are simply putting unnecessary restriction into the flow of lubrication.

I would much rather have adequate flow with some particles less than half the thickness of the lubricant film included, than have inadequate flow just to get the particles down to one quarter the size needed to do any damage...

Better?
Who says they're better?
Mobil1 marketers?
Data?
Save your money for good oil and stick with the YZZF1s.
Your tC will be happy.

Seriously.
It's what I use and I'm 100% **** about my car and maintaining it.
I've done a lot of research, and the one thing I feel good about is Toyo OEM filters.
I use synth oil and that's all you need. (not saying you NEED synth, it's my choice)

Drive on!
