Shift linkage JUMPED, nothing but 5th gear!
Today, when leaving my house... I went to shift into 2nd and my gear selector decided not to. It decided to become dislodged. It also decided that it was going to stay into 5th gear.
This freaked me out, as my xB only has 4100mi... SO I decided that it's too late to call Toyota and I wont have my car all weekend... SO, I had my buddy open the hood, as I wiggled the shifter front to back. The linkage was only slightly moving!
Took the screw out of the "rear cupholder" from under the felt, and unscrewed the shift ****, pulled the e-brake lever up and removed the snap in filler panel that resides with it. Then I popped front out of its spot and lifted the console out... to my amazement, the front to back gear linkage had JUMPED out of its holding place in the shifter base. Odd, but nothing holds it down other than 2 felt pads on the center console which is held down by plastic interior rivets.
All is well, just wanted to let everyone knows incase this ever happens to you!!!

Not really sure if the feltpads hold pressure on the cables, but from the looks of it theres nothing else that holds them down. But yes, those are the ones im talking about.

Probably would have been on my roof if I wasn't lowered, with 17" alloys...
Sounds dangerous, now...

Lol, just keep a phillips in the glove compartment, if it ever happens... pull over, shut the car off... and do as I said above. Had I known that was the case, I would have done it right then and there :
Hello to everyone. I am Chris, the new guy. I have an XB which sounds like it had the same linkage problem you have been talking about, but mine is currently in the dealership's shop with the gears torn out of it. Just wondering if anybody has heard of anything this extensive. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
