Maybe it's the med student in me... but...
1) The "happy" feeling from alcohol comes from your brain sensing INCREASING amounts of booze.
2) The "crap" feeling comes from both DECREASING amounts of booze, as well as the effects of toxic metabolites.
If you don't drink so fast to begin with, and nurse your drinks... you can actually maintain the rising levels of booze over a longer period of time, without actually having to have that much in raw amount. Leads to better/easier recovery and longer enjoyment of that buzzed feeling.
Try it... Nurse 1/2 beers per hour over a night (3-4 hours)... You'll feel just as buzzed as if you slammed some shots (same amount of booze, but delivered in 5 minutes vs. 4 hours). You'll also feel a lot better in the morning, since you got to "process" it during the evening without completely overloading your system.
The BEST and ONLY hangover cure == IV fluids from a "banana bag." If residents are out drinking, and they're called in for an emergency, you'll see them hanging out in the lounge, all on IV's... It's funny as hell.
