why? people have said that a number of times.. but WHY? i dont see the difference.

as i said before, i dont care for mac vs pc debates. i know it all comes down to what you know how to use better that makes it "better." ive never had a problem with any of my pcs ive built. they've been fast and reliable for years with any software ive put on them. i am perfectly aware, however, that its EASY to f-up a PC. its so easy, as a matter of fact, that mac sales are rising. its such easy prey for their marketing.

same thing with ipods. the reason for their success is not their technological superiority. people dont know anything abotu that stuff. most competing mp3 players to ipod play more formats, have more features, etc. but ipods are easy to use. and so.. they sell.

and mr meaty, i have an xp disc, but not xp64bit :[ also, id be losing all that great functionality of its various video and audio inputs, and tv in/outs. unless i mastermind a way of getting those drivers to work with a clean non-Gateway installation.

 

To be honest, there isn't a difference when doing graphic design. A PC can match any Mac. But Macs are known for being a designer's computer, so Apple loads 'em up with little Mac-only tools and apps and whatnot, and supposedly they're "easier" to use. In the occasions that I've used Macs for graphical editing or whatever, I've found that they are a little smoother. Maybe that's because my computer is dated. Who knows? Don't forget that Macs have fewer security issues.

I don't care much for mac vs pc debates either, because when you get right down to it, it's all opinion, anyway. I've had plenty of experience on both, but I just prefer PCs. I like that they are far more customizable than Macs, among other things.

Anyway... Next subject! :]

i think a lot of that had to do with optimization for the powerpc chips, which did indeed make things faster. thats, of course, no longer true since they left ibm

Hunter, multi-tasking is just better on a Mac. OS X manages memory SO MUCH ____ING BETTER than XP. I had no idea why either until I got my Mac. I thought things like CS3 and iTunes ran perfectly fine on Windows, then I got my Mac. It loads so much faster, doesn't hog memory, runs smoother....I don't ____ing know, it is just better on a Mac. I only have 2GB of memory and I've had iTunes, Firefox, Safari, Adium, iChat, iPhoto, iMovie, Aperture, CS3, Ventrillo, Quicktime, and Toast running without a single hiccup in performance. On my old PC (same amount, but faster memory), it started to feel sluggish with just AIM, iTunes, Firefox, CS3 and WMP running.


Also, it's a very promising sign when your computer takes only 48 seconds to shut down and fully boot to the desktop (FULLY boot, not just show the icons and ____). It's even more promising when after six months of use, the shut down and boot time has been cut down to only 42 seconds.

My Dell went from 1 minute 2 seconds (brand new, first shutdown/reboot), to 4 minutes and 38 seconds (shut down, stop timer for PW log in, wait for everything to fully load on desktop, be able to spam F5 on the desktop without delay). I got both the Dell and iMac at the same time.

cs3 eats a TON ive noticed in windows. dont know how it does on a mac, but yeah, i can def. agree memory management isnt too great on windows machines, for whatever reasons.

 

The coolest thing about CS3 on OS X, is that it doesn't even open a new window...it's hard to explain...I'll take a screen.

 

ive used it quite a bit on a mac, at school that is. we have a lot of macs there. half mac half pc. it ran fine. one personal preference i have is simply not liking the floating apps. i like an app being fully enclosed as it is in windows. opening photoshop for example, all its panels are floating over the desktop. i know a lot of people like that but i prefer the good ol' gray background sealed-deal style haha

 

TBH, I'm the EXACT same way with Windows, I CAN'T STAND IT when a window is full screen, but not actually full-screened . I dunno, on a Mac I just adapted. I keep Adium on the left, Firefox in the middle, and nothing on the right (desktop icons).

 

Oh, also another really cool feature that I wish Windows had (it sorta has it but not really), is the screenshot feature. If you do Cmd+shift+3, it takes a full screen (print screen) or you can do Cmd+shift+4, and it allows you to select the exact thing you want to take a screenshot of (just click and drag the box and when you deselect, it will take a screenshot of whatever was in that frame).

(Running 4GB of Ram on a 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo laptop feeding two screens, a second HD, Wacom tablet, USB speakers, and connected to the LAN/WAN via WiFi.)
