so·da (sō'də) Pronunciation Key
n.
Any of various forms of sodium carbonate.
Chemically combined sodium.

it's not an adjective, it is a noun!

Soda pop is not sodium carbonate. Sodium carbonate is IN soda pop. Hence why it's called soda pop.

It kind of interesting when you look at this map....a survey of 100K+ respondants....

http://popvssoda.com:2998/countystats/total-county.html

New England, the desert SW, California and a LARGE pocket around St. Louis (???)say "soda"....

Most of the Northern US (excluding New England) say "pop"....

And in the South, they say "Coke". But I also don't get the "what kind of Coke do you want?"....."I'll have a Pepsi." (Shrug)

And check out the diversity in Indiana.

I guess the strangest thing I noticed, being from the Chicago area, was just North of the Wisconsin border (along the coast of Lake Michigan and up through North-Central WI [another good sized pocket]) was "soda" again.

Every time we have a customer at work from out of state, and I offer them a soft drink, I usually start off with the "what do YOU call it, question.
