Jon nice subjects,
but all the photos seem to be void of detail and sharpness.
i.e. in all the photos the people in the background have no detail and look like theyve been hit with gaussian blur.
I dont know if its the cameras settings or you overused the blur tool.
did you use your p&s or dslr?
I cant tell if you're being sarcastic or not when you say you're using your cheap camera.
if youre using the dslr, I know for sure that the 18-55 lens is more than capable of capturing more details than what the photo shows. The white balance is off too. Also your shutter speed needs to be increased and possibly lowering your aperture to increase sharpness, than fixing exposure in raw tool. You have a lot of motion blur.
other than that, your composition is nice and the subject is good.

Im using my DSLR I dont use my p&s anymore. Thats the point of a DSLR purchase.
I never and will never and never have used blur on anything
I shoot in nothing but manual mode.
maybe they looked blured because of DOF maybe they looked blured cause of motion, with low light situations IDK

there are two types of blur I see in your photos,
1. motion blur from too low of a shutter speed.
2. gaussian type blur where the outlines of the people are in focus but any detail in shirts and face are void of detail.
in low light conditions and a slow lens, Id take the shots underexposed to get the right aperture and shutter speed and fix later in raw tool.
but from what I see in the photos, the light is more than sufficient for the 18 55. Thats not considered low light at all. lighting in car shows should have exception lighting. I see the same gaussian blur effects on your outside pics. So I know its not the lighting.

I'm going to try and redo the shot when I lower the coils more. Also, I'll probably move it over more so that the lightpole isn't sticking out of my hood.
