Chip - HDR looks fine. You were able to avoid the haloing which is good.
Sushi - I'm kinda lost in terms of what your focus is in this photo. What lens did you shoot with? Maybe consider shooting with a faster lens so you can isolate your subject and bokeh everything.. try a 50 f/1.8 if you have one. Colors look good.

yeah i told him to prepare for comments and critique but it was all to help him.
he is shooting with a 55-200 and he was all the way at 200mm so i think it was just soft from being at the end of the range on a cheaper lens.

Haha it's okay for comments and critiques.. if you can look at them as not being personal, you can only become a better photographer.
Anyways, at the 200 end, i believe it's a 5.6 on the nikon? i'm not too familiar with their gear. but yah, that would explain why everything is in focus so to speak.
my suggestions would be to get closer to the subject.. i realize that might be hard because it's up in a tree, but the more you reduce the length between FOV and subject, the more bokeh and isolation you can get... even at f/5.6.. which you might want anyways cause then your DOF will be pretty thin at 200mm
