just got myself a new pitbull today. Here are a few really quick snaps of him. trying to come up with a name that is photorgaphy related. Don suggested ANSEL, from Ansel Adams which is prolly the best and most well known photographer of all times especially in the b/w world.

I've been in situations where the IS was invaluable to me, as image quality was absolutely paramount since I was getting paid for the images I captured.
Increasing ISO to get more usability in low light is no substitute for IS.
I've been shooting sports and concerts for years and have NEVER used IS
Stills, on the other hand, is where IS shines.
If you have extremely steady hands, then go right ahead, forget the IS. I however, do not. Thus, I find IS to be something that comes in handy.

Do you know anything about how Ansel Adams captured his images? They weren't hand-held compositions.
IS comes in handy for hand-held photos.
Look up f/64.
Boosting ISO results in unwanted noise.
Tripods are bulky, and can't always be used in tight spaces.
Flashes... depends on what kind of look you're going for. I prefer natural lighting. Every once in a while I use a flash, but it's not really my preference.
A monopod is still on my list, though. Something I've been meaning to pick up for a while.

if u have a flash u can modify the light to look natural, especially if u have a 430 or 580 that shoots with ETTL.
and a monopod could work even in tight spaces and is height adjustable.
and boosting the ISO shouldn't cause that much noise. Most cameras now days can handle high ISO's with minimal effects.
and that's just another reason FILM is better than digital....GRAIN is sexier than NOISE ha ha
