RnB: how long was your exposure?
Milano: if you want some nice DOF, i would suggest getting a prime lens (50mm f/1.8D or if you have $ 50mm f/1.4 by either Nikon or Sigma - Sigma is a bit more than Nikon). Congrats on your new purchase. Also, a question you should ask yourself is, "what am I going to do with the Camera?" Portrait shots, Landscape, Macro, or Telephoto shots? answer that and you can narrow down your choices of your new lens.

GOT MY REBEL XS!!! loving every moment of it. but i have no idea what to do. well thats a lie. my question is how important is the software becasue i know the software is what makes the pictures stand out right? also, if there are any tricks to help me learn quicker that would be great. just pm me.
^^ Just play around with different settings and lighting. Umm some people go by the rule of thirds where you offset your photo subject from the middle. it's really more of a suggestion so really just go out and have fun with it

I'm diggin the first shot, skiboarder.
Focused on the battery furthest away then moved the camera so that the closest battery was centered.

it just a small aperature number likef3.5 or lower. u can also get a greater effect by having the subject further from the forground or background as possible and i believe using a telephoto lens helps increase the blur too.
