Nikon owners will tell you to buy Nikon, and Canon owners will tell you to buy Canon. It really comes down to personal preference as far as bodies go. The ergonomics are slightly different and only something you can experience by holding and testing each brand.

I see, but both would be great choices I suppose? What would be my options from both brands if my price range is about 800?

Well if you want to buy new, I don't even see anything on Canon's site under a grand. With Nikon you have 2 current production choices, the D3100 and the D5100. You also have the D90, D5000, and D3000. Although they've been replaced I would still consider them since their production stopped just this year and they can possibly still be found new.

Canon also sells refurbs. One of my 5diis is a refurb and you can't tell it came with 770 actuations on it.

Good read: http://t.co/NZCDy8x It's unbiased on what happens when a canon user shoots a wedding with a nikon.

Nothing on their current lineup is less than $1k.

That doesn't mean that they aren't working on something, but I only keep up with what Nikon is doing so I wouldn't know.

On a cropped sensor 24mm to 35mm primes are ideal. Or something like a 24-70mm for a zoom. And for wide shots, pretty much any UWA will work.
