im just confused by the quality of the video modes. the girl said the hero3 black edition would be good for low light situations. but im not sure which one does that exactly i guess ill just play with it some more. its a fun little camera just need some practice with it i suppose.

Psyched to take it out this weekend. A local award-winning nature photographer is hosting a free workshop, so I'm going to be hitting that up as well. Not sure if he'll do hands-on stuff or just talk at us, but it should be interesting either way.

Nice! You'll love it. Feels like a brick in comparison to your old camera doesn't it?

It feels massive! It's great.

Edit:
Didnt want to submit an additional post, but I got a chance to shoot with it last night in a genetics lab I'm working in.
Still trying to get used to all of the controls and AF settings.

Thanks, man! I just need to build up a range of lenses now. I really love my 85 (very rarely do I find myself in need of something longer than that), but I am in the market for something wider. And, on a college-kid budget, I'm fairly limited.
At first I was really just wanting to go all prime lenses, just for the sake of simplicity and reducing the weight of my camera bag. I was all for getting the 24mm 2.8, but I've done a bit of digging and found the Tokina 17-35mm. And, while I'm hesitant to buy something non-nikon (I guess I'm just a snob), the reviews on it are great and the price is even greater. Has anyone here had experience with it?

I think my buddy used to have the Tokina. If so then I've used it before, although not on FX. There's not a lot of examples out there, but KR says it's as sharp as the Nikon version. Here's a small Flickr group: http://www.flickr.com/groups/1967978@N23/pool/

Here's a few shots from yesterday. I liked the diffused light from the overcast skies.

^Nice set. The only thing I credit KR for is convincing me to buy a Nikon lol. All other gear decisions are combinations of experiences from Nikon Cafe and sample images from Flickr.

I have a GoPro 3 White and Black. I don't use them for video. I use them solely for time lapse videos. I can tell you they are great for that.

Jon, I really like the city shots with that 24mm. They're convincing me more and more to just get the 24mm and forgo the zoom.

And Speedy, what kind of post processing are you doing? The photos are great. Dig the saturation of those colors.

Thanks man. 24, 50, 85 isn't a bad set up for a full frame starter kit. You could stay all Nikon that way. Personally I think I'm going to get another 80-200 like I had and forgo the 85 for now.

When I said "the zoom", I was specifically referring to that 17-35. I've been thinking about buying an 80-200 from the same friend I bought my d700 body. After I get something wide, of course.

@ethan the PP is some split toning and bumps in contrast pretty light PP oh and sharpening.

as for the zoom if i get a zoom im considering a 70-200 f4. the size is perfect plus any type of zoom work i would do wouldnt require f2.8 the size difference is worth it alone i hate lugging around a huge lens.

So I just picked up a Nikon D3100 to replace my D80 that started having many issues after years of loyal service. The D80 was a good camera, and a loyal travel buddy. But so long D80, time for the next thing.

Although I REALLY wanted either a d300 or a D700 the budget was very low. So that's where the entry level D3100 came in. First impressions was it was a lot like my first DSLR the Nikon D40. Just now with more MP's, and Video. (which I don't care for, but eh, I'll use it eventually just to use it)

So here is a few images I've taken with it so far. Still learning the camera's tricks and what it's good at and what it's not so good at with just a kit 18-55vr lens:

First shot with it. I wanted to test the higher ISO range. The D80 really sucked at anything above ISO400 and could easily detect grain. The D3100 however, really excelled here. This is at IS800 and hand held.

And went out to shoot around town some, but really, it was too cold, starting to snow, and super cloudy. Not exactly the best lighting. So I snapped a few photos, and only came up with one out of about 5 I liked after putting them in Lightroom 4.

Here is another shot. I wanted to try and catch the last race at the horse track, but ended up walking in, as the horses crossed the finish line. Funny thing, one horse went A-wall, dumping it's jockey and finishing the race alone. No word on the jockey, or how far the horse made it before it was captured.

So once it got dark, I figured I'd see how well it does at real night. This is where I am still learning the camera. Apparently, I focused on the shrubs/tree's near me, and not the city like I thought I did. And when aiming through a view finder, it's kinda hard to see exactly what's crisp and whats a little out. So the buildings in the back aren't nearly as sharp as I hoped they'd be. BUT a big bump on clarity in LR4 seemed to save the image some. (nothing that I'd print, but it's worthy of internet posting)

Finally, I come to this. A close up on some snow flakes using the kit lens, and editing it to black and white in LR4. The "tilt shift" look was from the f/4. I didn't add any effects.

Overall, this camera will keep me occupied for a bit. Although eventually, I will like to move up in to mid to low range professional camera's again, but I'm ballin' on a budget!

I love cloudy days ^___^
So why did u choose a d3100 over a d90? The body on the d90 is similar to a d80 as far as more controls/button lay out.
