ScionPro are you catching this??? Next to your retro Gangsta style this will look awesome as a pair I Think. Truly retro meets new school. As replacement for Tc Do not like though. Looks NOTHING LIKE a Tc in any aspect. but in So Cal I am sure could establish a Hot rod Market....Jury is still out on like/ dislike though!!

These numbers and figures were presented to me along with 8 others while dining with Mr. Hollis and several of his Scion designers this week in NYC.

Oh ... and Scion NEVER produced a turboed, RWD or AWD car, ever! Scions idea was to bring affordable cars to those who were looking to get into Toyota/Lexus. Its a stepping stone and nothing more. If you want performance, look to Toyota and Lexus.

And i will gladly point out agian for those like you who just dont get it. Scion marketed this as a coupe, not a tC replacement. The likely hood of a tC replacement would most likely be the FUSE. Most haters here arent in the age bracket they are looking for OR they own a ho-hum tC coupe.

There are thousands who get their drivers licenses every day, and they need an affordable quality built car. That is where Scion comes in.
the target age for fist gen xa/xb's was twenty somethings give or take 5 years but all sorts of people liked the car except most teens.

the first gen xB sold to 20's - 70 year olds , all over the spectrum of people

xa's went to very cheap people , people wanting the echo that disappeared from toyota's line-up or people seeing a project car

the tc wasn't really pushed to a younger crowd but all sorts of teenage to immature 20 somethings ricers bought the cars , as well as TONS of females of all ages between 16 and 50

and some middle aged couples looking for a "sporty" coupe with a fantastic value ( all the standard features on the cheap )

the xb2 is just selling badly , to who? from what I can tell no one who's really an enthusiast unless theyre sponsored and going to sema , lol.
young families , and someone wanting a bloated , ugly camry 4cyl wagon

the xd is a neat little car , a more attractive (stock vs stock) xa both stylistically and standard feature wise

who's buying the xd ? from what i've seen a lot of college kids just wanting a cheap decent economical car , some gray hairs since they cannot buy the first gen city car xb anymore.

the tC's replacement doesn't have to look anything like a tc just stay within the same car segment.

it won't be carrying on the name like the bastardized xb2 kept the xb name.

now if scion was gonna call the hako tC once it hits production then you can complain

if the second gen xB was given another name first gen xB owners wouldn't complain.

Interesting. I didn't realise there was such a demarkation line between xA, xB, and xD owners and tC owners. I'm definitely over 30, like xB's as well as tC's and I don't like the hako.

*After reading all 17 pages* ::sigh::

Ok, for inquiring minds:
The hako was part of an exercise in which designers were asked to design a vehicle that would capture the attention of Japanese youth. Inspired by Tokyo’s emerging trend of American vintage among young Japanese, Tokyo Design developed the Hako with classic American coupes in mind.

BUT WHY? Scion is for the American market, no?

American and Japanese cultures often influence eachother- Each culture interprets international trends to create a new trend with a twist.

Does that mean that Hako was developed for the Japanese market AND the US market?
The Hako is purely a CONCEPT, and developed to gauge the reaction of US buyers as Scion is still currently only available in US.

About the lineup of Scion- Does Scion plan on adding more vehicles to its lineup?Scion is an experimental brand, continually pushing the envelope to bring new buyer and young trend leaders into the Toyota family. Scion focuses on WHO to sell to, not how many they sell. Scion is a laboratory for change and has had unconventional model cycles. If Scion finds a model that’s appropriate for the brand, then Scion will consider expanding beyond 3 models.

Who’s the target for the Hako?
Scion targets urban youth trendsetters 18-34, however this CONCEPT is only a STYLING EXERCIES to derive a possible iteration of the iconic box shape.

The Hako Coupe is boxy like the xB- So is this the next xB or is this the new 4th vehicle in the Scion lineup?
This is just a CONCEPT vehicle. Scion has no product announcements at this time. The Hako Coupe is a design exercise and is able to execute styling elements that are NOT REALISTIC in a PRODUCTION vehicle.

On a side note: The xB2 is bigger because that’s what consumers wanted- So is the xB being replaced with something like this concept b/c its not selling well?
There are no plans to make major changes to the xB in the immediate future as it just launched last year. The new xB is doing well as the median age is 39 and 76 percent of customers are new to Toyota.

Why does the Hako look like a Honda Element / PT Cruiser instead of something unique?
The concept is a study of the influence of American youth on Japanese youth culture. The Hako Coupe is a Japanese interpretation of a classic American coupe.

Retro seems to be the trend at this year’s auto shows. Why is Scion following domestic OEMs? Is Scion trying to attract older buyers?
Japanese and American youth cultures often influence eachother. The concept is the study of the influence of American youth on Japanese culture. This is a styling exercise. Scion will continue to target trend leading consumers younger than 35 years old.

Why is C Pillar black?
The C pillar is black to enhance the wraparound effect and the chopped greenhouse.

Why is it orange?
Again, this concept is the study of the influence of American youth on Japanese culture. Tokyo Design felt orange shows the unusual lines of the concept in am impactful way. The designers also thought orange was eye catching and youthful.

Do any of the components in this vehicle actually work?
Yes, the video screens, fisheye camera, taillights and headlights.

Is this vehicle FWD or RWD?
Because this is a design exercise we did NOT work out the ENGINEERING details.

Is there something written on the tire tread?
The tire tread says “Scion”

There are a few more questions/answers, but I noticed these topic discussed most-
These are not MY answers, these are SCION’s answers and I cannot elaborate on any of them.

Anyway, keep the comments comin please =]

(Oh yeah, and it is on Scion.com now-- but the video of the reveal is not up just yet I don't believe)

I just wanted everyone to know that I got on Live Chat with Scion and I chatted with Jennifer (don't want to put her last name) and she has been reading this thread. Keep the comments coming because Scion is paying attention to what we are all saying.

Again, I'll say (and yea, I know it's a concept) the beauty of the 1st gen xB, and to a lesser degree, the xA/tC, was the fact that it was essentially a blank slate from the start.

An owner could do all sorts of different things to it and have it fit well into any number of preexisting stying cues. The issue with something like the Hako is that it would essentially become a one-trick pony. Great, you modded your Hako to be a rat-rod... so did everyone else.

I'm just saying that the xB was such a success because it not only stood out like a ****, but it also is a pretty 'plain' car. That dynamic between eyecatching and customizability is what Scion should be shooting for. Different for the sake of being different doesn't work anymore.

ehhh it was ok. at first I was laughing hysterically and in disgust. After letting it settle in for a while instead of posting what I initially was going to which was just "UGLY", I waited a day. It is pretty disappointing from the teaser shots we got earlier of just the front bumper, but a concepts car is just that, a concept. The interior of the car is pretty cool, but the exterior i'm just not feeling.

All in all I give it a 4 out of 10.

Honestly, it's the windshield that makes the car fail. In the pictures where it was the exact same thing, but with the top reversed or with the windshield angled at 60-75º, it looks much better. The front view is just horrific and the back is even worse. The point
was to make a "box", hence the name Hako, the VP even said it meant box in the press conference. Since when do boxes go from fat to thin and have curves. xB = Box. Hako = Failure attempt at reviving the xB. That thing will sell less than the xD is selling. Also, isn't it time Scion made something other than a hatchback? xB, xA, tC, xD, xB2, Fuse, Hako, CCx, t2B...seriously...Leave the Hako alone, let it just stay as a concept, you've heard from the people. The car has potential with some tweaks, but it's just the same thing over and over again. In the end, it's just another failed attempt at topping the xB1 in terms of style and originality.

People were excited about the Hako, the hints to what it would look like, were a deuce-coupe styled vehicle, and people were actually thinking about it. Then they saw it and were left in total disappointment. Right now, the majority of people who like the vehicle, are the ones who are xB enthusiasts, which is understandable. But Scion, you have to realize how small that target group truly is. The 'ratrod' theme that we THOUGHT we were going to see, was showing interest from xB, xD, and even the tC owners, who are usually the people who absolutely hate anything that could show competition to their cars.

xB owners want something stylish and original, the ones who traded up for the xB2 wanted more power. tC owners want something faster, sportier..90% of comments made by tC owners in "what should Scion do to the tC next" threads, are : 6 Speed, RWD, V6. I know those things are impossible to have under $20,000, but maybe Scion should look a little further. tC owners usually go from a tC to something like an S2000, 350Z, Evo...or even Civic Si or MazdaSPEED 3. I know this car isn't meant to be the new tC, but why add another compact hatch to the lineup? If you're intention is to get rid of the xD for this, then great...or remodel the xB2 into this, then go for it. Don't make a lineup thats' : compact hatct (xB), compact hatch (xD), compact hatch (Hako), compact hatch (tC).

You say you're listening to the community about your cars, but seriously, who the ____ are you listening to? You've destroyed the car that made Scion, you've created miss after miss and you just continue to disappoint the majority.

hmm, not really digging it. Thought it was going to be more tC like and not as boxy as the rest. Oh well.

WOW! At first I thought "Oh my god! I can't believe this thing! it's horrible!!!"

After looking at it, I realized I don't hate it, but that it's just so different than what I was expecting that I was shocked. I think that's the point with Scion's models. The original Scion design quality evoked emotion and withdrew a response. Be it positive or negative, it is supposed to withdraw something from you.

This car does that, and I like it. Can't wait to sell the Hako Coupe! ;)

Scion may only be available in America, but the cars are near direct dirivetives of the JDM brethren. Ist/xA new and old, bB/xB, xB2/Rumion. Only the tC is the stand alone and even that may change. I see where the compnay is going. what do I like most about Scion tho is the guerilla ads. the CD's and my xB1 and xD. granted there are some things I wish the xD didn;t have like electric steering( hate it) as it can't keep up with quick transitions left to right. but anyway, Scion will be just like the rest of the Toyota lineup in time. the median age is going up and it shows.

I love all the Scions don't get me wrong, but why pay more for a tC to get less room, worse gas mileage, mundane looks, and more power?

The Hako stands out like no other. It would cool to drive just because people hate it so much. The interior features are amazing. I hope they can pull off half the stuff.

At least Scion didn't create the Aveo or Calibur. *shudders*

Ugh. I don't like design-by-public-consensus; that leads to mismatched parts that assembled together, do not make a whole design.

I think the design only needs to be tweaked a bit, instead of overhaul. This is not the Aztek or the Baja; vehicles that should have never gotten out of the autoshow circuit and onto the streets.

Don't reverse the top as others have photoshopped (it makes it look too much like the xB), but just rake the front window 10 degrees or so, and pull the back side forward so that there's a lip to the rear hatch. Pulling the rear side forward emphasizes the boxy forms than if they were tied together, and helps to maintain the horizontal lines of the older racer cars that were meant to be the inspiration.

Print and mail me some 3D prototypes to play around with, please.
