Scion xB Unleashed in Chicago BODYKIT + WHEELS!
For me, it basically feels like a slap in the face from scion. They gave us the box.....WE built the culture. It feels like they are basically telling us that we are not the market they were truly after. So they go and design a completely different type of vehicle. As others have stated i do feel that is resembles the looks of the chevy HHR, or the Daihatsu Materia. Where is the UNIQUE look of the scion. They did SQUARE when everyone else was doing aerodynamic. Now what?? They decide to fall in line with the rest of the auto makers, and make a car that will not stand out from the crowd in any way.
Yes it looks respectable (maybe) with the addition of the body kit and wheels, but the sad fact is, the 1st xb was a trendsetter, not a trend follower, and that in itself was respectable. Five axis did great job trying to polish a terd, but the sad fact is.....STILL A TERD.
I will certainly go to the dealer to look at this car when it hits the market, but the sad thing is I am not excited or anticipating it arrival. I will stick to what i own for now.
I am an xB owner so i may be biased, but don't tease us with the T2B and then give us this!! I along with probably numerous others will probably look at other car company's for my next purchase.

1. MORE HORSEPOWER
2.MORE INTERIOR ROOM
3.STILL VERY UNIQUE
4. AND YOU KNOW THEY HAVE POTENTIAL WITH A DROP AND WHEELS
ALL OF US CAN BE REALLY GLAD WE'VE GOT THE FIRST GENERATION.
I PLAN ON KEEPING MINE FOREVER....10 TO 15 YEARS FROM NOW I'LL BE THAT OLD GUY AT THE CAR SHOWS SITTING IN MY STUPID LAWN CHAIR SAYING "YEP, I BOUGHT HER NEW."
HONESTLY....I'M REALLY GLAD IT DOESNT LOOK ANYTHING LIKE OUR BOX......

Scion has Ford and GM (and to some extent the Honda Element) on the ropes and with the new xL xB they are going after a very large market that wants the xL xB.
Soccer moms et al.
This is not what I want however. I want as one of my cars, a true compact with great fuel economy, a big interior that is very nimble in traffic. The only things I'm lacking in my current xB are side airbags, more interior illumination and chunk of insulation to reduce interior noise at highway speeds. Other than the airbags, I can easily modify my present xB.
Interestingly, the Daihatsu Materia is made by a division of Toyota. It's probably not being sold in the U.S. due to the fact that the Europeans for years have embraced smaller cars and hence represents a larger market.
If you start to see $4.00/gallon gas in the future...you might see this car being sold on our shores.

Another supersized vehicle that follows the usual boring formula for the U.S. market: MORE power, MORE room for overweight Americans, WIDER, LONGER, HEAVIER, and of course much LOWER MPG!
BONUS: It comes with a coupon for a double cheeseburger, SUPERSIZE order of fries, and a SUPERSIZE Coke to get on your way home from the dealer!
If you're willing to wait till 2010, the xB will come with a V6, same engine that the Toyota RAV4 has. It'll be built at Toyota's new assembly plant in Canada.
I'm glad I bought the sensible JDM xB in 2003.

Oh man... y'all just need to wait until you see it before getting too worked up. The pics don't do it justice. Trust me and don't dig yourself into a hole with critical posts here. When you actually get your hands on it, most of you are going to love the thing. The pics just don't capture the essence of the thing.
I believe that they were trying to accomplish a few things with the newer models.
1. do what they did with the first xB... make a car that you did either love OR hate... but over time came to love the platform that was presented and the endless posibilities towards mods.
2. appeal to that new gen buyer that wants the "future" looking car with a bit more stock appeal.
regardless scion has done the research and pulled info from all of us in some way shape or form be it surveys or surfing through scionlife and similar sites. all models are still versatile, open for endless modifications, still ahead of their time, relaible, and still maintains their "underground" appeal for the average buyer.
if you have not SEEN it in person... or felt it... or sat in it... then you really have not experienced it.
im sure scion is happy that there is hate it/love it talk... it means that they accomplished what they wanted.

I have no doubt Toyota will sell more of the new xL xB than the original, since it does appeal to a wider audience. However, the fact that something sells in large numbers does not mean it is an intelligent choice. I cite the past decade of SUV sales as an example.
However, this wider audience generally has very watered down values regarding global warming, intelligent use of resources and the impact their consumption has on future generations. As a group, they think short term and are the ones who whine first and loudest when fuel prices go up because they don't see the connection between supply and demand.
I'd rather follow my own drum and find a more suitable vehicle that fits my lifestyle.
The new xL xB has the wrong recipe for the cake I want to bake. It's not obscene like an Escalade, it's just not what I want. The increase in size and the lower mpg are enough for me to write it off. I don't need to see that in person before making a decision.
On the other hand, I do like that Daihatsu Materia made by a Toyota division, presently sold in Europe. Right size, right concept. But then, the Euros have been so much more sensible than us for years about what constitutes a reasonably sized auto. Any chance of seeing this vehicle in the U.S. ?

Exactly what I was thinking. I wasnt so sure about either of the new models when I saw the leaked photos, but having just got back from chi-town I am sure these things will be awesome.
The haters can say "you have to say that...etc you work for Toyota/Scion...etc" all you want. I CANT wait to get my hands on a BSP xB. mmmm 2 tone black & red @ the beltline, a nice drop and some 19's~ here I come
Scion probably wanted to get away from the boxy shape. The xb sales have been falling and it looks like Scion has attributed this decline in sale to the looks of the vehicle, so they changed it for 2008. I’m not surprised they went away from the box and gave the vehicle curves—most of the new cars out now have rounded edges and curves. Some people liked the originality of the box and that’s a good thing. Scion is hoping even more people like the new look to increase sales—that’s why they made it look like other mainstream vehicle. If they thought the box would sell it would still be a box.
I found this in one of the xd posts from submited by Rich_Manas
If those numbers do turn out to be accurate then the new xb achieves the same mpg with an auto and is even better mpg then the current xb with a manual trans. Curves are a lot more aerodynamic and it shouldn't be as heavy as the tc or the Camry so maybe. We'll have to wait and see until late this year.

a presskit was given to us during the unveiling which included the volume 9 brochure. it did not include the weight of the vehicle but did show mileage. the weight for the auto xB was shown but not the manual.
30/34-auto
32/37-manual
whether or not these are the real figures remain until the cars official release.

I saw the car today and it looks so cool in person. The only bummers for me were no intermittent rear wiper, one backup light looks out of place, ugly antenna, and the rear seats look really cheapo. Scion wouldn't let people in the cars but the interior and gauge cluster looked so sweet. Thank god it now has cruise control. It also comes w/ HIDs, outside temp readout, and avg speed and mpg gauge. I am considering a trade after seeing it in person.
I am on the fence. When you get one you can be garrantied to spend $6000 just to get it to look good i.e. wheels+tires, body kit paint, suspension and so on. I hate to say it but the Dodge Hornet looks pretty bad ___.

The Daihatsu Materia and the Toyota bB are the same car, if you put them side by side they look very close.
I wish they would just bring the new bB to the US instead of trying to make something for the US market, after all the xb was never made for the US market and that would be the reason its popular, why mess with that formula.
anyways heres a pic of my buddies bB WAAAAY better then the new xb

Until I see this thing in-person, the verdict is still out for me. Yes, the modded one does look better. However, I can't help but think Toyota put a Honda Element and a Saturn Vue in a room together with some cheap wine and no "protection"....and here's the result.
My fingers will be crossed when I actually see one.

Its accually kind of growing on me already. There are still some things that im not a fan of but its really not all the horible. But still not enough to make me trade mine in for one.
