Just found this article. It kinda reflects what has already been said here...but it may confirm some speculations.

http://wardsautoworld.com/ar/auto_scion_drop_xa/

As Toyota Motor Corp.'s groundbreaking Scion youth brand edges closer to its fourth birthday, the auto maker is readying new models to keep the marque fresh.

In doing so, Toyota will drop the xA hatchback and boxy xB next spring in favor of two new '08 vehicles. The brand launched sales with the two vehicles in California in June 2003 and will end their production in December.

“The xA and xB will always be very special models for us and have contributed greatly to Scion's success, but we're ready to move into our next product phase,” says Mark Templin, vice president-Scion.

One of the '08 models will be dubbed the xD, a Toyota executive confirms for Ward's. Toyota trademarked the name in March, according to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office website. It also has trademarks for tD and tE.

Don Esmond, senior vice president-automotive operations, declines to divulge the xD's vehicle type, but tells Ward's, “it won't be an SUV,” in keeping with previous Scion declarations that Gen Y buyers, unlike their parents, don't find SUVs desirable.

Ward's data shows a front- and all-wheel-drive “sport wagon” joining Scion's U.S. lineup next year as an '08 model. It will share the next-generation tC's new platform, dubbed Toyota NCV, which also will underpin the new Toyota Corolla.

However, it is unclear whether the sport wagon is the xD or the other unnamed new model.

X2 Everytime I try to describe the xA I call it a baby Matrix. People then say "Oh, now I get it"

And it will have a bigger price tag

There is absolutly no-way that they will release the xD at the current Xa low price of 13.4K. And given the Fit is 13.8K base, being an 06 Xa owner... I have no concerns about resale. Common sense says the base xD is going to have to be 14.4K+

Correct me if I am wrong, but the Xa is the lowest priced Japanese produced automoble currently avail?

So, I don't think you can go wrong (in terms of resale) by owning one if they are going to take it out of production and replace it with a more expensive model. ~imo

(And if the xD has AWD, there is 0% chance it would sell for the same price or get the same milage as the cur Xa,)

Thoughts?

I want to get the AWD option for my xA. I've heard it's pretty resonable for what it is.

The amount of torque needed to make an AWD system work without sacrificing MPG is hard to accomplish with a straight 4cyl. In fact I don't remember ever seeing a vehicle that had done it and gets over 30 mpg. I had to heavily modify my old Subaru WRX (turbo boxer engine design) to get power and MPG over 30 but I had to use 91oct plus octane booster (roughly 93oct equivalent) to stop the ping.

In short AWD systems are HEAVY and need lots of torque to get things moving. MPG killer! But very nice to have if you live up in North Dakota like I do.

Also, considering how good the FWD works, I don't see a REAL need for it here in the states. It's more of a novelty IMHO.
If AWD is needed buy a Jeep!

I realize this is a month old but I think it may be a bit different for someone who lives in Tennessee. I understand that you do get snow and ice down there occassionally but try living in New England where weather patterns change by the minute. Is it too much to ask for a small AWD hatchback getting better than 30mpg and offering a manual transmission. I have been patiently awaiting news on the xD to replace my '92 Tercel commuter car and have also been doing research on the Suzuki SX4. Subarus are overpriced and quirky and not as small of a vehicle as I would like. A manual trans AWD xD would be an excellent commuter for me. My wife and I would have seriously considered the AWD Matrix when she was looking but alas, no manual transmission.

In my opinion, either the Ractis or the Auris would be great as the xD. Just give me the option to have AWD and a manual transmission. I think AWD will be a part of Scion for '08, but I am skeptical that it will be available with a manual.

Oh yeah, first post here.

I know all about snow and ice. I lived in Detroit the first 30 or so years of my life. I've used my xB quite a bit up there in upwards of 8 inches of snow and ice and it worked perfectly fine with the trac control and only FWD.
I'm liking that new Suzuki SX4. It comes with electronic awd or 4 wd. Looks kinda like an oversized xA. It also has some really nice colors.

Hey, I have been getting around with my Tercel and some studded BFG snow tires for countless years but I happen to live on a dangerous hill with a 16% grade. Everytime it snows I have to really struggle to make it up with studded snow tires and sometimes have to just park it at the bottom. Meanwhile my wife's 4wd Honda Element with non-studded snow tires just zips right up. I know that people can be outdriven in the snow by a fwd vehicle. I pass countless 4x4's and Subarus, Audis stuck in ditches because of poor tires or drivers every time it snows. I have just come to the decision that 4wd/AWD will be a part of the next vehicle I own.
