Default i want to black-out my tail lights

i know what i need and how to do it, but iv never done this before. should i do it myself or go to a shop? it seems like there is 3 bolts that holds each tail light in and seems preety easy to take off, does anyone know for sure how to take the tail lights off? what is the level of difficulty for sanding, spaying tint & clear coat without screwing it up and lookin all blotchy?

Personally I would use vinyl overlays.....check out www.bluebatmobile.com.... Alot of people have been very happy with his work.... I myself am going to purchase some as soon as it gets warm enough here to work on my car.....

just a suggestion....

what about the purpose of the luminancy of tail lights warning cars behind you when breaking? Doesn't seem like its that cool to pimp out tail lights when it really doesn't do anything but give more hazard to other drivers. Just an opinion.

I've heard that the smoke doesn't black them out that much where they can't still be seen.

Yes, my tints look darker than they really are. The reflectors are still quite visible in the light. Light output is affected very little. Here's a pic with my 6/10 standard tint:

I sprayed these and then wetsanded the orange peel out and had them cleared with automotive clear.

i'd definitely recommend washing/sanding/spray painting the tailights yourself, if you feel confident and skilled enough to do it... that way you can tint to your desired level of darkness (obviously) and it looks hella nice when finished. but be forewarned that it's very easy to screw up doing it that way, and hard to correct once you've got the paint on there.

Next time I do a set I'll take pics step by step and do the how to article.

even if you do mess them up they are not wasted. You just have to wetsand them and start over. The difficulty level is not very high though but I do reccomend having a body shop clear them so they have the glass like finish.

The overlays look great though as an alternative for someone not comfortable doing it this way.
