before someone asks...no it doesnt have anythign to do with the amount of coats of clear that is on the car. infact the more clear you put on a car the worse off you are. the MOST clear you want on a car is 3 coats. that is the MAXIMUM and even this is pushing it.
the only thing that could possibly be wrong with the paint, is a flaw in the ingrediants...either a bad batch of clear ingrediants..but if this is so they could take a look at the VIN numbers of these tC's who "suposedly" have paint problems and see if that was the case. obviously there hasn't been enough problems because this has not been done. why do i think this way? simple, i work at a ford dealership. i have seen with my own two eyes this exact thing happen. in 04 roughly 5000 focus's got recalled because of falty product in their clear. guess who was the one who got to mask sand and paint a fair share of them....ME!
just because your car gets scratches from the "wind", doesnt mean the paint is crap. you have absolutly no proof of where those scratches came from, i have scratches in my gold....yes the gold I sprayed on my xB, that i have NO clue where they came from. scratches happen.
now if your paint is truely FLAKING then yes...90% of the time that is a problem in the paint/clear. that or somethinig somehow got spilled on the car..sat on the car. and the chemicals started to peel away the clear.
anybody else have any more questions about scion's "bad" paint. i'd love to prove you wrong.

when they say "double hand sanding" all that means is after one coat of color goes on...they take and whipe the serface clean of any dust that might have got on. then they re-apply another set of color/base over it. it has nothing to do with the quality of paint...or how much "better" their actual paint is. the only thing that says is there will be less dust in the final outcome and final product.
do you know what proprietary means? That means it isn't a simple layman's process. There are elements that aren't disclosed, and what makes the process different from whatever is common knowledge and whatever knowledge you think you know.

hes completely insane if he thinks a $70,000 lexus gets the same crappy paint job as a $18,000 scion.

now once again. there is no superior paint process. it is all the same. just different brands of paint. you cannot bash scion because we've had 10 or so people come on here and say that their paint sucks, because its chipping and flaking. sure 3 or 4 of them could be true..maybe their paint did flake for no reason. how many people have you heard of that got their paint fixed by scion because there was really something wrong with it? how many got it cover'd under warrenty?.......exactly.
before you try to come on here and tell me i dont know what im talking about and im trying to argue just because i can. ask if i do know what im talking about...how do i know...what school did i go to. ask the questions before you start to bash me because you dotn think i know my paint.
Hey all you idiots on this topic....I have seen my man work and I have seen his projects and I have seen his car.. He knows what hes doing and he does it very well... If any of you disagree with him, why dont you start giving him reasons why he is "wrong" rather than saying something stupid like "and you are wrong" yes that is directed at you kratos! This isnt a place to judge people for being right, why cant you accept the fact that maybe he knows just a little bit more than you, take it and learn from it.

Anyways enjoy your little painting arguement.
i got the clear bra (full on the ap and minus bumper on the ssm) and the rock chips etc have stopped. my hood took a good rock to the clear bra and the bra chipped off but the paint is ok. if it hit the bare paint, it probably would've looked horrible.
i also recommend front mud flaps to keep scratches off the panels rear of the doors and the bumper applique because i kept getting chips on the top of the rear bumper (from where i don't know?).
just my experience...

The exterior is just painted with a high grade automotive enamel.
Paint jobs are painted with a catalyzed enamel.
Paint jobs that are painted with a single stage polyurethane with a sealer.
And paint jobs that are painted with a base coat, clear coat, and urethane.
Are you telling me that these three processes are the same? Even though it clearly says that they are different. Please enlighten me.
Oh and TC06CHICK I do not doubt that your buddy paints well. I am just asking for clarification on how I was able to quickly research and find proof that there are different painting methods and all he has is hearsay from trade school that they are all the same. So if he could enlighten me, that would be great. Oh and evidence and proof would be nice.
Also I never said he knew more than, me cause I only know what "THE GOOGLE" tells me. haha, so I'm open for info.
So could your buddy tell me how paint jobs that clearly outline different processes are the same. That would be great.
Ok ok im gonna put in my two cents cause i have put in many years to learn the painting trade and I hate with a passion ignorant people that talk about painting like their experts.. and thats all it is is people that dont know trying to put in their two cents. I am gonna back honey0bucket and elaborate a little more. First of all to kroats, there is no such thing as enamle any more... that is old type of paint your grandfather may have used... its all a urethane product now... and as far as all yourscratches paint is paint it doesnt matter what process a manufacturer uses to apply it to their cars... it all has etch over the bare metal and then a sealer and then base coat(color) and then a clear coat. and not matter what u do clear always goes over the top. usually 2-4 coats.. and now for the simple part clear coat is clear coat.. its all urethane and most companies use the same and just lable it differently and some actually produce their own and to all you owners who have a bsp tC its black youcan look at it funny and your gonna se a scratch... you can whipe your finger on a clean car and see a scratch on a black car its just cause you have a black car.. and to all of your cars that are pealing... ther is a slim chance that it came from toyota like that.. but for some of you that dont know all cars go to port where options are installed and soem times cars get damaged so they repaint at port be4 they even get to the dealership and that maybe a faulty paint job..scion uses no better paint then toyota, acura, volkswagon, or any one else, there are some german manufactuers that use a form of powdercoated clear where its sprayed on and baked at a very high temp. similar to real powderocating. clear bras do work i instal them for the dealership that i work for. and for the 600 it takes to do a clear bra you cant get your whole car clearcoated and that wouldnt do you any good it just makes your car easier for a paint failure... more paint/clear is not better. i am not here to start a fight im here to clear this shyt up cause its rediculous to hear people spouting their mouth like their experts.....

First, I pulled those processes off of a Maaco web site, so yes those processes are still used in 2006. So I would venture into saying that you are wrong in saying that all paint processes are urethane.

Argue if you want but I would like evidence and proof that paint processes are now ALL urethane. Thanks. If no proof, then all you have is hearsay and blah blah blah.
You do know by stating that quote that you disagree with honeybuckets.
honeybuckets argument is that everyone uses the same paint and processes. However you just stated yourself that german manufactures processes are different.
My only argument was that all companies don't use the same process, and thanks for agreeing.
Furthermore, I would hedge my bets that if car companies actually hire ChemE, MechE, and EE's for a paint process division that they all aren't using the same paint job processes.

oh and I would like to add that I have 0 years in the painting world so I am not acting like I know everything about paint.
But, with "the Google", I can back my arguments with citations and facts. More than you people are doing.

oh yes i still am agreeing with honeybuckets... i didnt say ALLLLL german manufactureres use it and the ones that do only use it for certant cars...so yes i still agree with him and the process is still the same and the end result is still the same the powder clear is little bit different then urethane it only gives you a flatter serface with less orange peel and yes im sure there are manufacturers who have people to make their own processes like lexus for examples double hand sanding bull shyt or what ever you want to call it but like i said b4 it all comes down to 2-4 layers of clear coat sprayed over the top. and that my friends is what is protecting the entire deal from scratches and rock chips... and clear coat is clear coat weather its ppg or sikkens or basf. its all urethane clear if something brushes your car it may scratch, if a rock hits it, its gonna chip. paint is there for first of all corrosion resistance and to make your car look pretty... if you are all affraid of chips and scratches and dont want to put any kind of bra on your car then go down to your local line-x store and have your enitre exterior linexed that should make you happy and even that you can still get some scuffs... but at least you wont have any chips in your piant and then me and honeyobucket wont have to argue with some ignorant ___ people that say they know what their tlaking about... but really have no ____ing clue... i dont c ome down to your job and tell you how to play with your self so leave the painting to people that know wht the heck their talking about!!!!
