Default Thanks Scion for cheap windshields

Ok, I dont know if it is just the worst luck in the world or the fact that scion is puttin cheap windshields on the cars. but in one month I got two really bad chips in the front windshield of my tC. not to mention a million other lil small chips on the front windshield.

is there anything you can put on the windshield to make them tougher?
anyone else having the same problem?

i'm in NY so in the winter i know cold weather and rocks flying at the windshield increase the possibility for a chip. BUT COME ON!

I used to work in a shop that installed clear bras on car's bumpers, hoods, and fenders to protect from rock chips. I have seen basically the same thing that goes on a windshield... so, yeah, there is something out there.

Ive driven 4 cars in my short lifetime now, and the only car that has ever had a cracked windshield was my rattle trap Scion tC. I had to pay $900 to replace the windshield after just 3 months of owning it. So although I have no direct proof that it wasnt just an unlucky day, I do agree with you that the tC has a cheap and easily chipped/broken windshield.

I have a chip in my windshield as well but I don't think that the windshields are cheap.

does anyone seem to know what that coat for the windshield is called? cause i would sooooo replace the windshield if that coating had some kind of guarntee or something....
so its like a 50 / 50 shot with the chips in the windshield? half have and half dont... lol that cant be a good statistic. hahahahaa

but seriously, i would be really interested on findin out whatever it is you can put on the windshield to help protect it.

Maybe its toyota. My wife has an 03 corolla and we broke a windshield with a rock on the highway. It happened in Italy so insurance didnt cover it. We were doing 110 when the rock hit and it came from on coming traffic probably doing the same speed.

Make sure you get the chip fixed soon. My wifes window didnt actual crack until the next day. If I had of gotten the chip fixed that day, it would have saved replacing the entire window.

I think it's just your bad luck... I've had plenty of rocks and pebbles hit my windshield from trucks infront of me with their lifts and no mudguards... and still not a crack or chip in the windshield. Everytime I hear a hit noise... I'm like, oh crap!... and nothing... so... sorry to hear about the chips.

I have a really bad one on my mine as well, luckly its not on my view, I got it out here in AZ(never happened out in Cali.), you wouldn't believe the size of rocks flying around out here in the highways.

Complete bunk!
I've owned 12 cars and about half of those got cracked/chipped windshields - including the new Mustang GT I just rented last month on a trip.

You guys are gettin' paranoid...Area 51 anyone?

I did not know that someone can make cheap glass. Unless there is weak sand, no bubbles mean its as strong as it is thick. It can not be too thin because it would just shatter.

The only thing I can think of is the way it was formed was slighly off and is brittle...it certainly would not be made cheap.

I have had them in every car I ever owned EXCEPT the tC. It comes down to luck a lot of the time. Cheap glass shows up more in the form of stress cracking and optical degradation in my experience (which is usually what you get with cheap aftermarket glass.... $150 windshields for example). My windshield has taken some serious hits so far without any visible marks.

This is the reason you pay the small price to get glass coverage on your insurance. In MN it comes automatically.

stop driving through Rock quaries.

Honestly, I got a big chip in the windshield less than 12 hours after taking delivery. Rock was pretty huge though, and rolled off a passing semi carrying a front end loader that was covered in mud...
