Default Auto tC's: Hard to put shift **** to Reverse

I know nothing about transmissions, gears, gearbox, etc.. So please bare with me.

I have an auto and recently I felt that it's hard and would have to put a little force when I put the shift **** to reverse (R) coming from park (P). Does anybody experience this too? Please don't tell me my tranny is about to die out on me...

I double pump my brakes just for it to bite into reverse. Does this make any difference?

I'm stepping on the brakes as hard as I can. I'm thinking maybe it's just cold or somethin... But I'm no mechanic, so I don't really know what's goin on...

The auto has a shift lock function where you have to have the brake depressed to shift out of park. I assume there's a switch actuated by the brake pedal when there's a certain amount of travel by the brake pedal.

On page 189 of your owner's manual they tell you how to shift from Park while pushing the shift lock override button.

What I would try first is to "exercise" that shift lock override button by pushing it over & over, maybe 10 times. There's a chance that switch button is dirty and exercising it may clean it up and maybe you will be able to shift normally again.

If this little trick doesn't work, keep on using the override button until you can take it in to the dealer for repairs, it's probably that brake switch that's bad ... hopefully your car is still under warranty.

I see. Hopefully it's just dirty. Is it possible for me to clean it? I'll try and clean it tomorrow. Thanks a bunch! :D

I wouldn't try to clean it, I don't know what's involved in pulling the switch out, let the dealer worry about that if the exercising doesn't work.

By dirty I mean it may have just a thin film of dust or grease. Exercising it allows the switch contacts to wipe themselves clean, or possibly pop the internal parts of the switch back into their proper place.

This happened to my emergency blinker switch - first time I drove the car home the blinkers came on by themselves. So I turned the switch on & off about 5x and haven't had a problem since.

Hey, I'm not even sure this trick will work. It's just the only simple thing I can think of to try before you have to take it to the dealer.

Okay... I'll try to exercise the gear shift and hopefully it'll wipe off.

I appreciate it bro! Thanks!

Just to be sure - it's not the gear shifter, but the shift lock overrride button you're exercising. The switch that's described on page 189 of your owner's manual.

if the cars not wormed up yet that might be why. take it to the dealership or a mechanic

Imma get off my lazy butt and read that manual right now. :D

I only experience this when I start the car from a cold start.

And yes, I'm parked at that moment and not moving.

Are you parked on an incline or level surface?

If on an incline, before you put the car into Park, follow these steps:

1. Keep the brake pedal depressed
2. Set the parking brake
3. Put Shifter into Park
4. Take foot off brake pedal

This technique makes it easier to shift out of Park.

If you're not parked on an incline, ingore this post

i've noticed a bit of trouble if i dont set the parking brake before i put the car in park

by trouble i mean i can tell the difference

if you use the parking brake to hold the car first-like go from D-parkingbrake on-park, then brakes-reverse-parking brake off, you'll see what I(and 2_tc) mean

It's even recommended in the owners manual to park with this method.
