Default CAI vs water= problems

Just curious if anyone has had this problem, so I can eliminate it.
A couple of days ago it was raining hard as heck and I drove through a puddle, not huge but it made a little splash. Then my TC started to "vibrate" under back pressure, but still ran fine and idled fine. Do you guys think I atomized a little water into the combustion chamber? It went away with in a few min. but it has happen before. I guess I have some of the plastic not in the right place and water can get through. Thanks for your help.

Unless your "puddle" was about a foot deep and you submerged the filter, you're fine. Even if a drop or two of water hits the filter, it is extremely unlikely any of it was sucked into the intake.

Well the puddle was not a foot deep, more like 3 inches deep, and I was going about 40mph, still does not explain why I was getting a vibration under back pressure. I also have a water sock on the filter.

then the issue wasnt the water. even if some water gets on the filter it will evaporate before it hit the engine. I drove through a huge amount of water and almost hydrolocked my first engine ....so i know exactly how to do it ..... and 3 inches of water isnt anything. You really have to crash into 12" water and have the plasic crap on the bottom of the car fill up.

so i guess you heard this noise right after you hit the water?

I hyrolocked in a 2 footer =/, it was deeper than I expect. Not fun at all and took roughly 7.5k outta pocket for repairs. OP to save yourself the trouble, just convert to a SRI if it's an INJEN CAI.

Like Ack said, a little water is no problen b/c little bits of water would get evaporated by the heat before it gets anywhere near the engine. If your really worried, when you see a puddle, don't accelerate.

probably the hot exhaust pipes suddenly being cooled and changing sizes while driving.

I have a CAI for about a year and drove in pouring rain and never had any problems with hydrolocking.

^ I would've waited for the rain to stop. Or I woulda taken the CAI until I crossed if it was that bad. Not worth the $$$$ to repair

Even though the rain stop the puddle would still be there. I was far from home and don't see how I would take the cai or or replace it with what... Best thing I could've done was to push it pass the puddle.

Get a short ram and you dont have to worry about it. Power difference between short ram and cold air is negligable.

But they definitely exist:

Well I appreciate everyone's help, I guess I was just trying to find someone who has felt this before. I defiantly do not take unnecessary risk when it comes to water. I have only felt this twice once for about 10 sec. this last time for about a min. and it was after hitting running water in the road under a frooken hurricane in the Midwest. It may have been the cooling of the pipes as well, i do here some knocks in the tunnel when it happens. But much thanks guys.

guys lets end this post - to hyodrolock you need to slam into a huge amount of water and have it full up your front end w/ water .... its hard to do. very hard to do. I was going down a road that had almost no lights on a HORRIBLE night and it went up a few inches evey second and before I knew it was dropping the F bomb over and over and over ....then i let off the gas and my car stalled - dont let off the gas and keep going and get out of the situation as soon as possible. Unless you are in this horrible situation ....dont worry about hyprolocking. This whole road was flooded - that situation could have been avoided if there were some darn lights on this real dark side road which joins these 2 towns together.

Well the thread was not intended to be about hydrolocking, but if it was possible to suck a small amount of water through the CAI thus making it run rough for a min or so. Mine never stalled just seemed to vibrate the exhaust a lot during back pressure. I was just seeing if anyone have ever experienced this situation, and the stories I have heard so far are very helpful.

^ did you get any white smoke out the exhaust? Maybe what you fealt was the cold water hitting the exhaust and the temp difference caused such? maybe - i dunno. Its just a really bad day when u hit a ton ...a ton of water in dark streets. I was in real bad storms and a few inches of water and major downpour .....no issues w/ that.

It was raining way to hard to see if I had any white smoke, could barely see in front of me at the time. But the cold water to the exhaust is another possibility. I would figure if it was something really bad like sucking too much water it would throw a light, but all was good.

nope no light at all - your engine will just crash like it hit a brick wall. but yea if the whole exhaust and plastic flooded with water that is a HUGE difference in temperature ...like putting a freezing cold spoon in a hot water or a red spoon out of the fire into a cup of cold water ....
