Change Oil Filter without draining oil?
So I had already drainded the oil when I discovered that I bought the wrong kind of wrench for the filter. Can I now change the filter without draining the oil I just put in it?
Yes but you will still lose some oil when you take off the filter. So you will need to add maybe 1/4 to 1/2 a quart. But why would you add new oil before you change the filter?
Yes it does! You notice how the filter is higher up then where the oil drains out? Cause it is! It would defeat the purpose of a filter sitting under the oil. The oil needs to flow threw the filter to do its just and it wont sitting at the bottom of the pan! You will lose some but not all. You may need to even add a quart!
And not wasting another 30 dollars In oil...
yes, raise car, screw out old oil filter, fill new one, screw it in, crank car (pull efi fuse), let it sit for a min then check level and add as required. It's not gonna take much, 1/4 a bottle if any.
p.s. about 2-3 oz of oil is gonna drip out

How about a friend driving you to a parts store and getting the correct wrench? You can change the filter w/o draining oil but some oil would have to be added. Of course, there could be contamination from the filter in the new oil. I suggest just getting a ride to the store and getting all done at once.

i think the piece that the filter screws onto is metal, and I know the bottom of the block is al, i think due to diff expansion rates it causes it to self tighten. Ive never over hand tightened my filters and ive had some that were a _____ to get off. Ive also never used an oil filter wrench - good ole screwdriver and a hammer will work every time
Now, however, Im using K&N filters that I got a steal on a 12 pack of them, and they have a nice handle little nut you can use a socket on on the bottom of thwem

you only need a wrench to remove a filter.. if you can't, find other ways to do so if you're already in the middle of an oil change.
i've used screwdrivers, hammers, and been more recently been using a large set of alligator pliers that reliably do the job.
wow so many different things going on here, haha.
anyway, do you mean you want to put new oil in, go get the right filter then change it? if so, then yes it can be done but you obviously would contaminate the new oil. not a huge deal but then whats the point of changing your oil.
like someone already mentioned, get a ride and go get the right filter.
